Pain when latching, too much or too little milk: Lisa Hinterwimmer from Langengeisling helps young mothers as a lactation consultant.

Langengeisling

– Although breastfeeding a baby has been one of the most natural processes since the dawn of humanity, many problems can arise.

Lisa Hinterwimmer also had to experience this.

She learned from this and trained part-time to become a certified lactation consultant.

When the 29-year-old from Langengeislingen became a mother three years ago, it was clear to her that she would breastfeed her baby.

But it wasn't that easy.

A lack of information and incorrect information in the clinic led to problems.

“I read a lot about it myself because I didn’t know that there was such a thing as breastfeeding advice,” says the trained wholesale and foreign trade clerk, who is on parental leave with her now eleven-month-old daughter.

A few years ago there were only a few lactation consultants, but there are increasingly more.

There are also some in the Erding district.

The need is increasing, not least because of a lack of midwives for aftercare.

Women in Hinterwimmer's circle of friends also complained about breastfeeding problems.

So the mother of two decided to further her education.

She completed a six-month online distance learning course with a final exam in Sindelfingen.

She has been able to call herself a certified breastfeeding consultant since February 2023.

The company name “Stillwunder” results from her own feeling: “For me, breastfeeding is still a miracle in which you should follow your natural instinct,” says Hinterwimmer with conviction.

She has advised 50 young mothers so far, most of whom come to her on a recommendation.

Hinterwimmer can also help with questions about complementary foods or bottle feeding.

She offers an online course for breastfeeding preparation, which is useful for pregnant women from the 25th week.

After the birth, she provides support with home visits, or online if the distance is too great.

Breastfeeding problems are diverse.

“There can be pain when latching on, the milk supply can be too little or too much,” says Hinterwimmer.

During her visit, she explains the correct latching technique, checks whether the baby's tongue tie is too short, which makes sucking difficult, and dispels some persistent myths.

Contrary to some warnings, the breastfeeding mother is allowed to eat pretty much anything and does not have to go without onions or orange juice.

“The milk is produced through the bloodstream and not through the contents of the mother’s stomach,” says Hinterwimmer.

Women with breast implants can also breastfeed if the implant is located under the breast muscle.

“I just want breastfeeding to work for the mothers,” says Hinterwimmer, but emphasizes: “Nobody has to breastfeed.” The duration of breastfeeding is also very individual.

“If the mother supports breastfeeding, then it works.

“It’s a nice feeling,” says Hinterwimmer.

She was also much more relaxed with her second child.

Young mothers are often unsettled.

The Langengeislinger woman advises you to listen more to your feelings, because every child is simply different.

Weaning is also a concern for many women.

The easier intake of food via the bottle teat pampers the babies, who have to work harder at the breast.

Here the specialist suggests breastfeeding-friendly supplementary feeding, with which the baby receives bottle feed through a tube parallel to the breast.

She also has an explanation for the restlessness of some babies in the evenings, who often want to be breastfed.

“This is due to the mother’s increased prolactin level, which the babies can literally smell,” says the lactation consultant.

This hormone stimulates the growth of the mammary gland during pregnancy and leads to milk production.

In addition, the babies not only get milk from the breast, but also the attention and physical contact that they need to process the experiences of the day.

During her home visit she can answer urgent questions, after which she is available to the mothers to provide further information via WhatsApp at no additional cost.

Even if she returns to work part-time in March, breastfeeding advice will continue because “for me too, it is very satisfying when breastfeeding goes smoothly,” says Lisa Hinterwimmer.
