Farm laborers near Naples were allegedly lashed with belts after taking a timeout or left without hospital treatment after serious illness, the Public Prosecutor's Office of Santa Maria Capua Vetere said Thursday on the suspected illegal hiring of foreign farm hands in the Caserta area.
The probe has led to the issuance of four residence bans in the province of Caserta for agricultural entrepreneurs from Maranodi Napoli, accused of the crimes of labor exploitation and employment of illegal labor.
They allegedly forced the mainly North African hands to work for 11 hours a day at a pit.
