Sign of protest: Farmers must continue to apply pressure, even if field work begins again soon.

The farmers largely agreed on this at the meeting in Grafing.

An evening of discussion in Grafing is intended to make the precarious situation of farmers clear to the population.

But the farmers keep to themselves - and vent their anger.

Grafing – Almost 40 visitors, primarily men, are sitting in the hall of the Grafinger restaurant this evening.

They accepted the Bavarian Party’s invitation to “dialogue with our farmers”.

An information evening for the population has been announced.

Much of what is currently bothering farmers and causing them to protest is being discussed.

Drop in the ocean: once planned introduction of vehicle tax for agricultural machinery

But there is no dialogue with the population, the consumers, because the audience is primarily made up of farmers.

Exceptions include Walter Schmidtke (Bavarian Party), who moderates the event, and the two city councilors Christian Einhellig and Josef Klinger (both Free Voters).

Georg Weigl from the Bavarian Farmers' Association and Franz-Xaver Hundseder from “Land Creates Connection” have been invited as guests.

One thing becomes clear: the federal government's once planned abolition of tax relief for agricultural diesel and the introduction of a vehicle tax for agricultural and forestry machinery were just a drop in the ocean.

Farmers are angry: investment costs rise – milk price stays the same

A lot of things have been bothering farmers for a long time: laws and regulations that were created in the past decades and make their work difficult.

The milk price, for example, did not develop adequately with the increased investment costs.

“At the beginning of the 1990s I had to spend 4,000 euros on milking technology per cow, today it’s 25,000 euros,” says one farmer indignantly.

In general, agriculture is complex, but “everyone knows what the farmer has to do, only the farmer himself doesn’t know.”

The city dwellers wouldn't understand agriculture anyway.

“For urban people, as they are increasingly found in the district, agriculture is at best on the margins of awareness,” says Bavarian Party spokesman Günter Baumgartner.

There is talk of the “serving country and the ruling city”.

Apparently everyone agrees: developments cannot continue like this.

947 agricultural businesses in the district

The representative of the farmers' association knows that there are currently 947 agricultural businesses in the district with an average area of 29 hectares.

People are upset about laws on set-aside, tethering and many others.

“Not just the farmers, the general public must take to the streets,” demands one and promptly receives a nod of approval.

Another misses toughness in the farmers' association.

From his point of view, he should also stand behind unannounced demonstrations.

A third farmer recommends that his colleagues go into politics.

“Our problem is that everyone here says that they are not part of any party.

We have to take part, get involved, no matter what party we are in.” Another responds that the farmer has no time for that because he doesn’t have any free time.

The media is also criticized because far too often they do not write what one would hope for.

Many issues are addressed and discussed.

There is great outrage: farmers want more planning security and to put pressure on the government

The outrage of the farmers and individual farmers present cannot be ignored.

The pressure must be maintained and expanded - even if field work begins now.

As Weigl from the farmers' association says: "A country lives from early risers." A lack of understanding about some things also becomes apparent: for example about "subsidies that Indian farmers receive from us."

The general tenor is that there is no planning security due to constantly new regulations, that investments are paid off over 20 years, but during this period new laws come along again and again, which sometimes simply destroy what has just been built or at least need to be supplemented.

Overall, there is a great need for clarification, which, at least on this evening, does not really reach the intended recipients.

Because the dialogue does not take place with the farmers, but only among them.
