It doesn't always have to be a teacher's degree: you can also work in schools as a career changer.

However, some requirements must be met.

District

- You accompany children and young people for several years, teach them important things for life and, together with them, lay the foundation for their future lives: teachers.

There is no question that they have an important job.

And that a lack of skilled workers is a problem.

The employment agency and the Bavarian Ministry of Culture are trying to counteract this.

And also inform those interested in the district about the possibilities for lateral entry.

And there seem to be some who can imagine appearing in front of classes in the future.

This was demonstrated by two online events offered by the Career Advice in Working Life (BBiE) Alpine Foreland Region, to which the agencies in Weilheim, Traunstein and Rosenheim belong.

On two evenings, those interested were able to find out in front of the screens how lateral entry can be successful - both times the information evening was fully booked with more than 200 participants.

Lateral entry is currently not possible at every school

“The feedback exceeded our expectations,” says Romy Reichel from BBiE.

“The great demand and the high number of participants showed us that there is great interest in this topic and that we have met current trends.”

The online lecture provided information about the individual types of schools - and also the information that there is currently no possibility of lateral entry at primary schools.

This is different, for example, in middle schools, for which there are special programs to prepare proven temporary staff for long-term and permanent work in schools.

Those interested can also try lateral entry at other branches, special needs schools and vocational schools.

Lateral entry yes, quick entry no

But what are the requirements for this?

This was one of the questions asked by participants in the chat.

And then it became clear that becoming a teacher is not that easy.

The possibility of lateral entry is aimed at those “who do not have a teaching-related degree,” explained Lena Matthe, an employee at the Ministry of Culture, at the event.

Those interested have no chance without attending a university or a technical college.

A bachelor's degree is not enough.

Depending on the type of school, the Master's, Magister's or Diploma degrees are required.

In addition, depending on the type of school planned, certain subject areas are required - at secondary schools and high schools, teachers teach individual subject combinations.

Very good knowledge of German is also necessary.

Anyone who decides to go to school usually begins a preparatory service that lasts two years.

The second state examination must also be taken.

At least three career changers are currently in the district

The lectures lasted around 80 minutes, after which the participants asked questions for around three quarters of an hour.

“The aim of our event was to inform as many interested parties as possible about a lateral entry and the different paths to becoming a teacher,” says Romy Reichel from the careers advice service.

“With our career-oriented event, we also wanted to provide information about the profession and the various activities of teachers, to provide a platform for exchange and the opportunity to ask questions.”

According to the State Education Authority, there are currently three teachers in the district who are undergoing special measures at primary and secondary schools - the authority is not responsible for the other types of schools.

The Ministry of Culture, in turn, does not record the number of career changers for individual districts.

At the end of the lecture, Nina Kümpel, an employee at the Ministry of Culture, encouraged those who do not currently meet the requirements: the need for teachers will be “very high” in the coming years, she said.

“I am sure that we will expand one or two lateral entries or special measures or expand the circle of applicants.”
