Iodine-ion batteries are a "sustainable alternative" to lithium batteries.
This is what emerged from a conference promoted in Milan by RSE, the Energy System Research company, indirectly controlled by the Ministry of Economy through the sole shareholder GSE, with the patronage of the Lombardy region.
"The main advantage of sodium ion technology - stated Omar Perego, 'project manager' of the Generation Technologies and Materials Department of RSE - is that it offers an opportunity for sustainability in terms of the use of non-critical materials".
The first of these is sodium, according to Perego an "abundant and distributed element in nature, unlike lithium, which is present in the list of 'criticalraw materials', drawn up by the European Commission based on the supply risk and the economic importance of the material ".
According to Rse, sodium-ion batteries are suitable for applications both in the field of stationary storage, such as domestic self-consumption and grid services, and for their use in the field of mobility and for this reason they are "a valid alternative to the more consolidated technology of lithium-ion batteries".
