How to prepare shutters before painting?

Before repainting your shutters, you must prepare them, depending on their material.

You can install trestles beforehand to place the dismantled shutters and thus facilitate their renovation.

For wooden shutters:

- Disassemble them and remove the metal parts such as hinges and clasps.

- Examine your shutters carefully: are there any fungus, moss, etc.?

?

In this case, strip them and treat them with a suitable product (fungicide, etc.).

- Otherwise, simply sand them to remove the remains of the old paint with abrasive sandpaper or an electric sander to even out the surface.

It is also necessary to sand the edges, slots and edges of the shutters well.

- If necessary, repair the cracks with wood putty and sand to even out.

- Then dust before painting.

For metal shutters:

- Start by brushing the shutters with a wire brush, 000 steel wool or a sander equipped with a flap disc to sand the metal.

- If the metal is very damaged, also use a stripping product to clean it thoroughly.

Remove dust, clean with a just damp sponge and let dry.

Our advice

Also apply an undercoat of anti-rust paint.

For aluminum shutters

:

- Wash your shutter with a sponge soaked in soapy water or white vinegar to degrease the metal.

- Rinse and dry it.

- Lightly sand the surface so that it is a little more porous before repainting.

For PVC shutters

:

It is entirely possible to repaint PVC shutters with a specific paint.

But first, clean the shutters with acetone or white vinegar to degrease them and help the plastic paint adhere.

What type of paint should you choose to repaint your shutters?

Acrylic paint, plastic paint, metallic paint… Which one to choose for which support?

Which paint to choose for

repainting wooden shutters

?

Choose a paint suitable for wood and of good quality to resist humidity, frost or heat:

  • Specific exterior wood paints

  • Microporous acrylic paints, more breathable

  • Special wood glycero paints, perfectly adhering

  • Alkyd paints, with polyurethane resin, useful for regions with difficult climates.

For your shutters, also buy an exterior wood undercoat or a primer, as well as an anti-rust product and a metal paint to freshen up the metal parts of the shutter: bar, stop, stop, slide, etc. etc.

Which paint to choose for repainting aluminum or metal shutters?

To renovate your exterior aluminum or metal shutters, you can choose three different paints:

  • Iron glycero paint, with high covering power

  • Enamel paint or polyurethane lacquer, with a glossy finish

  • Epoxy paint that resists weather well

  • Acrylic or glycero aluminum paint

Several layers are to be expected.

Respect the drying times between each coat.

Which paint to choose for repainting PVC shutters?

Choose a paint specially designed for plastic and PVC.

Their specific formula allows the paint to adhere perfectly to the shutters.

Generally, they are sold in the form of a spray can.

For lasting protection and an impeccable finish, apply two coats of paint.

Acrylic PVC paint can do the trick for renovating PVC shutters, but it requires the application of a special plastic adhesion primer beforehand.

Finally, note that you can apply a protective varnish to your PVC shutters to protect them long-term.

Please note

: If you wish to change the paint of your exterior shutters, remember to take into account the regulations of your municipality and consult the PLU (Local Urban Planning Plan).

Certain colors are not allowed in certain regions, and you may also have to make a work declaration if the color is different from that previously declared.

When is the best time to paint shutters?

In winter, your exterior shutters are subject to numerous attacks due to the weather: cold, wind, frost, snow, freezing rain, etc.

Renovating them at the end of the winter season therefore allows them to be protected again for another year.

You can also wait until the beginning of summer, when the sun is present to facilitate the drying of the paint, but avoid the peak summer season when temperatures are too high, with the risk of paint dripping.

Ideally, choose a day of dry weather, with a temperature between 10 and 25°C.

As you will have understood, careful preparation of the shutters before repainting them is an essential step to guarantee a lasting result.

The choice of paint is just as essential to ensure a lasting renovation.
