With the extension of the Jahn primary school, the city has completed a major construction project costing 12.2 million euros.

But the work has repercussions in court.

Bad Tölz – After a delay of over a year, the city of Bad Tölz can announce the completion of a large construction project: the expansion of the Jahnschule is completely finished after a few capers.

City architect Florian Ernst and Michael Wölk from the city's building construction department presented the building to the press on a tour.

The general public will have the opportunity to see for themselves at an open day on Saturday, February 24th.

The cost framework of 12.2 million euros was adhered to during construction.

Jahnschule Bad Tölz gets an extension

From the outside, a friendly light beige facade with overlapping panel elements of different sizes and large windows characterize the building, which stretches 57 meters along Jahnstrasse.

“The facade design is an interpretation of the wooden shingles on the tower of the old building,” explained Ernst.

In order to differentiate the color scheme, a decision was made against the bright white of the existing building from the 1940s.

The extension should be subordinate to the striking old building: This also applies to the height.

To create a tiered image in which the old school with its tower remains towering in the truest sense, the new building went deeper.

The gymnasium housed there and the town band's rehearsal room are located half underground, in the basement.

Lots of light and transparency at the Jahnschule Bad Tölz

But that doesn't mean it's dark there, on the contrary.

The city architect explained that visual connections through large windows - including within the building - were particularly important to the architect, so that light comes in everywhere.

“Transparency” is the motto.

Only when he looked into the gymnasium did the current headmaster, Peter Lang, find it a bit too much to look at, says Ernst.

As a special treat, the large internal windows can now be switched to opaque at the push of a button.

This works via a film that you can only look through when it is tense.

Extension made of concrete and solid spruce wood

Overall, the look within the new building is characterized by the contrast between dark gray floors and light spruce wood, in addition to the large windows.

Ernst speaks of a “hybrid construction”, i.e. a mixture of durable exposed concrete construction and a lightweight wooden construction built on top.

“With all the finesse”: City architect Florian Ernst shows the city band’s rehearsal room.

According to Ernst, the rehearsal room of the city band is a “custom-made solution” equipped with “all the finesse of room acoustics”.

40 to 50 musicians can practice here under the best conditions on around 260 square meters.

Thanks to acoustic sails under the ceiling, the conductor can hear each individual instrument.

Sound recording facilities are also available.

The new auditorium is the heart of the Jahnschule Bad Tölz

The city architect described the new auditorium, which is located as a connecting piece between the old and new building, as the “heart of the school”.

The characteristic arcades of the historic school building can be seen on one side of the room.

Here, where the current 199 primary school students can spend their break and where school events take place, there is a small retreat.

A relaxation room with a specially made seating niche on a podium.

The auditorium, gymnasium and rehearsal room have all been in use for a while.

They were put into operation between September 2022 and May 2023.

The situation on the first floor was more difficult.

As reported, the completed roof proved to be leaking.

Water entered the building and caused damage.

“Some things had to be dismantled,” says Ernst.

All of this delayed the completion of the expansion.

The new classrooms were originally supposed to be available from September 2022.

The city wants to take back the almost 1.8 million euros that the city had to spend additionally in court from the construction company that carried out the work.

“We have filed a lawsuit and are waiting for the oral hearing,” said Mayor Ingo Mehner.

Teaching kitchen with panoramic views

At the beginning of the year, the classrooms and specialist rooms on the first floor could now be moved into.

In the 58 or 68 square meter classrooms “you have the nice feeling of being in a wooden building with pleasantly warm, light tones,” enthused the city architect.

You can look into the workrooms through large windows from the hallway.

In between there is also a small “intensive care room” for small groups.

Finally, the new building also has a modern teaching kitchen.

From here, the students have a panoramic view of the Mühlfeld Church while cooking.

Next door, lunchtime care has found space in a room measuring around 130 square meters.

The Jahnschule's outdoor facilities will be completed in April

Currently we are only working on the outdoor areas.

Unlike before, the 2,800 square meter playground is no longer located directly on the street, but is separated from traffic by the extension building's barrier.

As an interim solution, only 1,100 square meters of the farm are currently usable, while the rest is being worked on “at full speed,” says Ernst.

A special attraction is a small pond, which, on the one hand, provides regulated drainage for the area and, on the other hand, can serve as a biotope for teaching purposes.

“It is of course fenced off so that no one can fall in,” said the city architect.

The entire outdoor facilities should be finished by April.

Open House

An open day in the extension of the Jahnschule Bad Tölz will take place on Saturday, February 24th, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

In a colorful participatory program, the students, the staff and the parents' council present the house in all its facets.
