A McDonald's is to be built in the Dorfen industrial area on the A94.

The building committee agrees, but some city councilors don't like the 20-meter-high advertising tower.

Dorfen

- Burger King on one side, McDonald's on the other - this is what the entrance gate to Dorfen will look like from the motorway.

The respective company logo will also light up about 20 meters above both fast food restaurants.

The Dorfen building committee gave the green light for the new McDonald's on Wednesday and also approved a few exemptions from the development plan.

Above all, the golden M, which was visible from afar, caused discussions.

The Burger King has been in the Dorfen industrial area since 2019, the year the Isental motorway went into operation.

A McDonald's will now be built on the other side of the roundabout and in front of the Hagebaumarkt.

The building application envisages a “dual-lane drive”, i.e. a drive-in with two lanes, as well as the restaurant with 474 square meters of space, a terrace with 122 seats, a small outbuilding for rubbish and a parking lot for 40 cars.

Building authority manager Franz Wandinger explained to the city council that this was permissible under building law.

“With a fast-food restaurant there is no confrontation with the city's retail concept.” The restaurant operator had also applied for exemptions from the development plan, which the committee approved with varying majorities after the debate.

Exceeding the building limits through a noise barrier in the north of the property, through the ordering terminals on “Dual-Lane-Drive” and through a “Drive-In” sign were the least of the problems (two votes against).

Three councilors voted against advertising steles with a height of 6.50 meters.

The development plan allows for a maximum height of five meters.

This requirement also applies to the 20 meter high advertising tower with the golden M. After a lengthy debate, a 7:4 majority voted in favor.

Such a height has already been approved for Burger King, said Wandinger.

This is about being noticed by the A94.

“You don’t have to make the same mistake again,” complained Ulli Frank-Mayer (GAL).

Walter Zwirglmaier (ÜWG) also said: “I am massively against this pylon.

This is a disgrace.”

“We spoke to McDonald's in detail about these pylons,” reported the building authority manager.

“That is essential for the business model.” The applicant also responded to the city’s concerns: the advertising would only be displayed in an east-west direction.

“You also have to offer something for young people,” said Martin Heilmeier (LDW).

Still, he called the exceptions “not happy” and worried about the trash around fast food restaurants.

"What can you do about it?

Is there a system to avoid waste?”

“Neither Burger King nor McDonald's are to blame for littering the landscape.

“They’re still the ones who shop there and behave like…” replied Mayor Heinz Grundner (CSU), without completing the sentence.

Hartl did that for him: “You can say it’s clean.”
