New York City is suing TikTok, Facebook and YouTube for harming the mental health of children and teens.
According to the Meta lawsuit, Snap, ByteDance and Google knowingly built and marketed their platforms to "attract, capture and addict young people."
The initiative recalls the lawsuit filed in 2022 in California.
The mayor of New York, Eric Adams, had anticipated the lawsuit at the end of January.
“Over the past decade, we have seen how the online world can expose our children to a continuous flow of harmful content and fuel the national youth mental health crisis,” the mayor said in a statement.
In addition to New York City, the plaintiffs include the school district and healthcare institutions, which allege that the proprietary companies have "knowingly designed, developed, produced, operated, promoted, distributed and marketed their platforms to attract and create dependency, with minimal parental supervision."
