Germany has delivered or promised weapons and military equipment worth 30 billion euros to Ukraine.

Nevertheless, there is still ongoing discussion about Ukraine's unfulfilled wish.

Berlin - Ahead of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj's visit to Germany, Green Party leader Omid Nouripour is urging the federal government to make an early decision on the delivery of German Taurus cruise missiles.

“It is right that Ukraine should get a decision.

Soon.

Because this has been pending for a very long time,” said Nouripour in an interview with the dpa.

At the same time, he emphasized that arms deliveries to Ukraine must be coordinated with the alliance partners.

Ukraine had already asked the federal government in May last year for the delivery of Taurus missiles, which can hit targets 500 kilometers away with high precision.

At the beginning of October, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) decided not to deliver any of these cruise missiles to Ukraine for the time being.

The fear behind this is that Russian territory could also be hit.

The Union, but also individual politicians from the Greens and FDP coalition parties, criticized the decision.

Nouripour did not make a clear demand in one direction or the other to Scholz.

He just asked for clarity to be provided soon.

In principle, he expects the Chancellor's meeting with Zelensky to be a clear commitment that the West continues to stand firmly on Ukraine's side.

Nouripour worried about blockage in US Congress

Nouripour was concerned about the blockade of further aid to Ukraine in the US Congress.

If Parliament does not clear the way for this, “we will have months in Europe to think about how we can compensate.”

Nouripour emphasized that Ukraine losing was not an option.

“Everyone knows that if Ukraine goes to Putin, it will be preparation for the next war on the European continent.”

But the Green Party leader admitted that the loss of American aid could not be compensated for “just by snapping his fingers.”

The USA is by far Ukraine's most important arms supplier in its defense against Russia.

Germany follows behind.

Scholz is currently trying to persuade EU partners to invest more in the Ukrainian armed forces.

The Chancellor will meet with Zelenskyj in Berlin on Friday.

An agreement on long-term security commitments is to be signed.
