It brings back childhood memories.

When I saw the carnival donuts in the display at the Neumaier bakery a few days ago, I once again - as I often do - reminisced about my childhood memories.

At that time we lived in Erding on Landshuter Straße, diagonally opposite the police station (now Malteser), where my father worked.

At that time, the Landshuter Hof (today a multi-story residential building) stood on the corner of St. Paul.

The innkeepers were the Dangls, with the best and nicest service, Rosi.

I picked up French fries every now and then on Sundays.

There were always many old Erdinger footballers sitting at the regulars' table, including “Nero” Krieger.

He once asked me during the autumn festival season: “Are you still going to the Wiesn?” When I said yes, he gave me two marks – and I was overjoyed.

Right next door was the Hörls' VeGe general store (today Immotions), which the legendary Schröder Resi ran with her husband.

When I walked to the school on Lodererplatz, I always bought a pretzel there, which cost a tenner (a roll costs a fiver).

I was often allowed to go shopping in the afternoon and always had the same route.

It started at the Gabler butcher shop (now Lobermeier), where I was always allowed to take “a Hirnwurscht” (yellow sausage) for 20 pfennings.

The next stop was the Neumaier bakery, where Mr. Neumaier was usually in the store with fresh baked goods and Ms. Neumaier sat at the checkout.

The change always fell out of a separate machine and ended up in a collecting tray, which was quite fascinating to me at the time.

The last stop was always the Hagl nursery, where I bought fruit and vegetables and was always particularly happy when the boss's sister, “Fräulein Mare” – black and gray hair with a bun – served me.

If something was no longer in stock, she would say apologetically with a sincere look: "Mei, that's the opposite now." And no matter what I bought, she always gave me an apple.

But once I misunderstood something when I was shopping.

I was supposed to get “a pound of cold cuts – 500 grams” from Gabler and instead I brought home five pounds of cold cuts.

I was praised by my mom.

Then it just occurred to me: Even though carnival is just over, I urgently need to buy a donut from Neumaier and a yellow - er - brain sausage from Lobermeier.
