The subway toilet at Josephsplatz has been closed for years.
District politicians are now calling for an alternative: a toilet truck.
The closed toilet facilities in the Josephsplatz subway station have been a concern for the Maxvorstadt (BA) district committee for some time now.
Due to renovation work, the public toilet has not been able to be used for more than four years (we reported).
Residents and visitors to Josephsplatz and the nearby Old Northern Cemetery regularly complain about this to the responsible BA.
At its most recent meeting, at the request of the SPD parliamentary group, a majority decided to call on the city to set up a mobile public toilet trailer - similar to the one at Gärtnerplatz.
This should give citizens the opportunity to relieve themselves at least during the summer months, when Josephsplatz is particularly busy.
Delay due to construction work
The politicians have suggested that the toilet truck should remain temporarily installed in the Josephsplatz subway station until the toilets reopen.
The Munich Transport Company (MVG) is planning to reopen the subway toilets later this year, but so far there have been repeated delays in the construction work.
Critical voices in the committee, however, are concerned that the public toilet van could be misused for drug use or that visitors could no longer use it over time due to a lack of cleanliness.
BA member Felix Lang (SPD) says: “The toilet at Josephsplatz was also an issue at the last citizens’ meeting.
Residents are rightly upset about the intolerable situation, which has not changed for years.
The residents will certainly make sure that the toilets remain tidy.” It remains to be seen whether the city of Munich will approve the facility and also finance it.
