Whether as a parodist, comedian, singer or presenter: Matze Knop cuts a good figure in many roles.

With his program “Courage for the Gap”, the 49-year-old has been touring the Republic since 2021 and is now making his first stop in the Allgäu: On Saturday, March 2nd, the self-confessed football enthusiast, who has, among others, Luca Toni, Franz Beckenbauer and Jürgen Klopp imitated, guest at Kaminwerk Memmingen from 8 p.m.

Mr. Knop, “courage to take a gap” always means a certain risk.

What does it mean to you?

Knop

: “First of all, I have a gap in my teeth.

It used to be even bigger - I could even eat a hamburger without opening my mouth (laughs).

Today it is a trademark.

But 'courage to gap' also means something good: we are bombarded with emails, newsletters and bills every day.

Sometimes you have to leave something out.

So it also means: more space for new things and perhaps also space for yourself.”

What can visitors look forward to in Memmingen?

Knop

: “A funny comedy program.

There are parodies by Lothar Matthäus, Thomas Tuchel, Harry Kane and Jürgen Klopp, who now has time again and can go on tour with us.

It’s definitely going to be a cool evening!”

Memmingen is one of the last of around 80 performances.

This begs the question: Do you ever get bored with the program?

Knop

: “No, every evening is different.

The audience is always different and I also have passages where I have not prepared anything but rather spontaneously interact with people.

No matter if it’s show number 5 or 75: I’m looking forward to Allgäu and going full throttle!”

How did your passion for imitating voices come about?

Knop

: “That was more of a coincidence.

My father was a sports reporter and I always imitated Gerd Rubenbauer's voice.

At some point Franz Beckenbauer and Boris Becker came along.

I just found it funny how they spoke and tried to imitate it.

However, I was still a student back then and almost shy, you could say.

Later, when I started in radio, I brought it out again.

Today all of Germany knows you.

Which footballer do you like to parody most?

Knop

: “It changes, because it depends on the variation.

Recently I was in a one-two at Sport1 with Felix Magath, who I have already parodied.

And then you sit there and think to yourself: He really speaks exactly the way I imitate him.”

You are not only a parodist, but also a musician.

You have released songs several times for major football tournaments, such as “Jogipalöw” in 2018.

Will there also be a hit at the home European Championships in 2024?

Knop

: “I’ll have to take a look at that.

You always need an idea that makes you say: That fits and it’s actually funny enough.”

Does new national coach Julian Nagelsmann also have his own song?

Knop

: “Anything can happen.

Maybe it’s about a player or I’m doing something completely different.”

Who will be European champions in 2024?

Knop

: “Germany!”

Honest?

Knop

: “I believe that we always have a chance, even if you don’t always see it that way at the moment.

The biggest challenge will be getting our defense under control.

We're in a great position offensively.

Now all we have to do is create euphoria.

I would like the people in Germany to just let their good spirits run free for four or five weeks during the European Championships, that would be good for our entire country!”

Maybe like in 2014. Germany's World Cup hero from back then, Mario Götze, has his roots in Memmingen.

Your words to the audience that awaits you there?

Knop

: “With the Allgäu I saved the best for the end of my tour.

I thought to myself: At some point I want to wake up in the morning in a beautiful country hotel, see the cows grazing and see higher mountains in the distance.

So I’m looking forward to the performance and of course to every Allgäu resident.”

Thank you for the interview.
