Construction starts this year: the fish ladder for Landsberg's barrage 15

Highlights: Construction starts this year: the fish ladder for Landsberg's barrage 15. By the end of 2027 there should be fish ladders (FAA) at all dams. The passes are designed for the Huchen, a fish that migrates upstream and is now threatened with extinction. The installation of a traffic light and an automatic bollard on the access road on the west bank of the Lech - a Uniper private road - has nothing to do with the new fish ladder.

Anyone who currently walks the riverside road behind the English Garden on the Lech towards the dam will see something new there: a traffic light and a bollard.

And below the weir, the embankment has been cleared over a large area.

Both measures were carried out by the power plant operator Uniper, which also owns the private road.

But they have nothing to do with each other.

Landsberg - The operator of the hydroelectric power plants at the Lech dams in the Uniper district has big plans: by the end of 2027 there should be fish ladders (FAA) at all dams.

Construction is currently underway on the dam in Epfach and is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2024 (the KREISBOTE reported).

But work on barrage 15 in Landsberg has already begun.

The reason for the construction of the 'fish ladders' is an EU water framework directive, informs Uniper's press spokesman Theodorus Reum Schüssel.

This requires the construction of the systems at all river barrages by the end of 2027. The passes are designed for the Huchen, a fish that migrates upstream and is now threatened with extinction.

In Landsberg, construction work for the required fish ladder is scheduled to start this year - which is why trees and bushes have already been removed on the west bank below the dam.

However, the start of construction for the project has not yet been determined, Reum Schüssel informs: “The clearing work at the site intended for the FAA has already been carried out in coordination with the authorities because, for ecological reasons, such work takes place before the start of the growing season must be completed by March 1st.” In this way, one can ensure that construction can begin during the year – as soon as the approval for construction arrives.

“The application for approval is currently with the responsible authorities,” says Reum Schüssel.

After their approval, the construction work will be put out to tender - and only then will concrete statements about the execution and timing details be possible.

The installation of a traffic light and an automatic bollard on the access road on the west bank - a Uniper private road - has nothing to do with the new construction of the fish ladder, said Reum Schüssel.

This was done independently of the clearing work: “It should be a permanent barrier, as unfortunately there are more and more people who ignore a barrier sign.”
