The renovation work on the Geretsried church is scheduled to begin in March.

Some donors help finance the construction costs.

Geretsried – The renovation of the St. Nicholas Chapel is scheduled to begin in March.

The Tölz architect Hermann Thurner is in charge.

First the scaffolding is erected, then the carpentry work follows.

All of this costs money: Josef Urso, vice president of the Interest Group (IG) for the preservation of the St. Nicholas Chapel, expects “570,000 euros.”

The city of Geretsried is contributing 200,000 euros to the total amount, and the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising has pledged 80,000 euros.

The Monument Office is donating 2,500 euros and 40,000 euros are to come from the German Foundation for Monument Protection.

The church foundation of the Maria Hilf parish, to which the St. Nicholas Chapel belongs, and the interest group take over the remaining share.

We are all the more pleased about the donations that the Geretsried Volunteer Fire Department and the Eghalanda Gmoi presented.

The fire department passed its hat around at the annual meeting.

“500 euros were raised,” says chairman Florian Effenberger.

The Gmoi donated another 600 euros.

“We collected money at the Christmas party and then topped up the amount,” explains boss Helmut Hahn.

It is very important to both clubs to get involved in preserving the cultural monument.

This is the third renovation for the over 300-year-old chapel directly on the B11 opposite the Gasthof Geiger after 1972 and 1990.

Extensive work needs to be done, especially on the roof structure.

Among other things, the wooden shingles need to be replaced.

There are exactly 1077 pieces.

The exchange is to be financed through sponsorships.

Shingles in the lower area cost 30 euros each, in the gable area 300 euros.

The gilding on the roof with the globe and the double cross should also be restored, and the facade and interior of the chapel, consecrated in 1722, should be painted.

Some floor tiles are also due to be replaced.

Fumigation against woodworm infestation was carried out last July.

Originally the hope was for a lower sum.

“But like everywhere else, construction costs have skyrocketed,” Urso regrets.

For example, for larch shingles: “Siberian larch is subject to an import ban.

So we have to resort to European larch – but its price has skyrocketed due to the increased demand.”
