The asylum helper group in Icking is still looking for other supporters.

That's why Claudia Roederstein invites you to an information evening.

Icking – Claudia Roederstein has been the contact person in the community regarding asylum seekers since 2015 – for the citizens of Icking as well as for the refugees.

Since the first influx of refugees in 2015, when the gymnasium of the high school was occupied, she and the group of helpers that formed spontaneously have been able to gain a lot of experience.

Enthusiasm, disillusionment and disappointment

Not only positive things, as the second mayor reveals in an interview with our newspaper: “Of course, the enthusiasm of many people helping was initially very great, but over time there was also a lot of disillusionment and disappointment.” From this experience she knows: “Asylum seekers also have to take responsibility.” Helpers are not there to lip-read and fulfill wishes, but rather to help people help themselves.

Integration only works if we approach each other from both sides.

Her belief is: “The most important thing is that people learn German as quickly as possible, and not just the children in school and kindergarten, but also the parents, even the women - there is often a problem with that.”

A total of 80 Ukrainians and asylum seekers in the community

In Icking, Roederstein relies on orderly, transparent merging: “As soon as we know who is coming and when, I write to the neighbors and inform them about the new situation.

It's important to me that they have a contact person for all questions at any time afterwards." This offers a bit of security for the Ickingers - but also for the asylum seekers.

Roederstein is relieved that the gym will not be occupied this time.

With the asylum seekers still arriving this month and next, a total of 80 Ukrainians and asylum seekers will live in Icking.

Some people from Ickingen had already reported empty houses to the district office in advance, which were temporarily allocated from there to accommodate asylum seekers.

Roederstein relies on an open exchange

“As far as the community is concerned, we have no influence on this procedure or on who moves in there.

“But it is very important to us that we complete this task as well as possible for and with everyone involved,” assures Roederstein.

She is concerned with peaceful and constructive coexistence in the community of Icking.

In this case for the coexistence of citizens and asylum seekers.

Together with the Protestant pastor Sabine Sommer, Claudia Roederstein is committed to an open exchange: “At the information evening we want to explain what the current situation is, what significance, for example, the emergency decision of the Munich Administrative Court has for Icking, and what support is currently needed for our asylum seekers is."

Everyone is allowed to contribute as much as they can – as a contact person, with homework support, German lessons or in dealing with everyday life.

Claudia Roederstein about the Icking asylum helper district

The focus of the evening would be on the questions, expectations, experiences and suggestions of the citizens.

She is confident: “We hope that interested Ickingers will come and that some volunteers will come forward to support us with integration.” However, the principle of voluntariness is very important: “Anyone who wants to is allowed to do so within the framework to contribute to the best of his ability, be it as the first point of contact, with homework support, German lessons or dealing with everyday life.” Even someone who can't spend more than one or two hours a week is valuable.

As asylum coordinator, she is responsible for all official questions.

Sabine Sommer and Claudia Roederstein will continue to accompany the helpers in the future, support them at any time with questions, problems and invite them to further, if necessary topic-related meetings.
