After three and a half months, Mainz 05 wins another Bundesliga game.

A perfect debut for the new coach.

Mainz - FSV Mainz 05 gained new hope in the fight against relegation from the Bundesliga at the premiere of new coach Bo Henriksen.

The penultimate team won 1-0 (1-0) against FC Augsburg on Saturday, ending their negative streak of eleven games without a win.

In front of 24,800 spectators, defender Sepp van den Berg scored the decisive goal for victory in the 44th minute, which moved the Rheinhessen team to within one point of 1. FC Köln in the relegation zone.

The last three-pointer came on November 4th last year in a 2-0 win against RB Leipzig.

In stoppage time, Augsburg's Mads Pedersen was shown a red card for serious foul play.

Henriksen, who was brought to Mainz from FC Zurich at the beginning of the week, sent five new players onto the pitch in his Bundesliga debut compared to the recent 3-1 defeat at VfB Stuttgart.

“Now we have to accelerate,” demanded the 49-year-old Dane before kick-off.

The emotionality he evoked was evident from the start.

With aggressive pressing, the guests were deprived of any desire to combine.

Despite all efforts, there were initially no chances to score because the last pass was often played too imprecisely.

After all: the defense was secure.

There was almost nothing to be seen from Augsburg on offense because the dual leadership of Ermedin Demirovic and Phillip Tietz were completely unregistered and there was a lack of ideas in the midfield.

After 38 minutes, the Mainz fans were screaming for goal for the first time, but Jae-Sung Lee hit the crossbar from eight meters after a great counterattack and exemplary preparatory work from Benjamin Gruda.

This almost took revenge a little later when Ruben Vargas came free to head the ball following a corner.

But FSV keeper Robin Zentner prevented the deficit from falling behind with a strong save.

In the final phase of the first half things got very busy.

After a free kick cross from Nadiem Amiri, van den Berg rose highest and headed in to give Mainz the lead.

FCA goalkeeper Finn Dahmen didn't look good in the action when he returned to his old place of work.

In stoppage time, Dahmen cleared Phillipp Mwene as he ran through the penalty area.

Referee Tobias Reichel initially allowed the game to continue, but was then radioed by the Cologne video cellar and, according to the TV images, reversed his decision.

However, Amiri only hit the ball from the penalty spot onto the post.

Five minutes after the restart, tennis balls flew onto the lawn from both fan blocks in protest against the planned entry of an investor into the German Football League.

The game was then interrupted and the teams were sent to the dressing rooms by the referee.

Fifteen minutes later the game continued - with the game remaining unchanged.

Mainz dominated and hardly allowed FCA to develop.

Anthony Caci had a chance to make it 2-0, but his direct shot was missed by Dahmen.

In extra time, the guests once again pushed for an equalizer, but were unable to do so.
