The range of all-day German classes for students with little to no knowledge of German is being expanded.
Germering – From the new school year, the program at the Wittelsbacher Middle School will also be available for children in the 5th and 6th grades for the first time.
Students who come to Germany and have little or no knowledge of the language have been able to attend special classes in Germering for ten years.
They were initially introduced at the Kirchenstrasse elementary school for second to fourth grades.
Later they were also offered at the Wittelsbach middle school for older children and young people - but only for grades seven to nine.
This should now be expanded.
As head of the social welfare office, Martin Rattenberger, reported to the social committee, full-day German classes are also planned for the 5th and 6th grades at the Wittelsbach middle school from September.
Until now, children in this age group who live in Germering have had to move to Puchheim, where the offer already exists, explained Rattenberger.
The city will not incur any additional costs as a result of expanding the offering, Ms. Rattenberger explained to the committee.
Reason: The European Social Fund (ESF) covers the personnel costs for an additional social education specialist.
The current system is already being financed from this fund.
However, the application to expand the program has yet to be submitted to the ESF.
Committee members voted unanimously to do so.
Important contribution to integration
According to Rattenberger, the German classes make an important contribution to quick and problem-free integration.
From the point of view of the school management, the project has also proven to be extremely successful.
At the church school, the six to ten-year-old children are taught in a so-called all-day program with the support of a social education specialist.
The students also have a fixed schedule in the afternoon until 3:30 p.m.
As the school writes on its homepage, the children learn about language as a cultural asset in a motivating and playful way and learn a lot about their new home.
The Wittelsbacher Middle School writes that by employing a social education specialist, the different learning requirements and cultural backgrounds of the young people can be addressed more intensively.
In addition to up to 18 hours of German, the middle school students also receive lessons in the other subjects on the timetable.
Four additional hours are planned for cultural education and values education.
In addition, together with other all-day classes, students can choose from an extensive range of music, sports, theater, games and art.
