The route has been around for 20 years, and the illegal installations were added during the pandemic.

But instead of being torn down, the previously illegal mountain bike trail will be rebuilt - with the approval of the state forests.

Hausham

- The agreements in the background have been going on for several years, and now the Gravitational Sports Club (GSV) is also publicly celebrating a great success: The construction of a mountain bike trail, which is planned by the GSV in the Bavarian State Forests on the Brenten in Hausham, could cost 12,000 euros Receive Leader funding – 40 percent of the total costs of 30,000 euros.

The Local Action Group (LAG) recently announced this to the GSV and gave the project a unanimous recommendation.

Now everything should happen very quickly: the association wants to submit an application for funding within the next three months in order to finance materials and tools.

Construction should start this spring, says club chairman Tobias Nussbaumer.

“Volunteer with members and other interested parties.” The trail should be finished by mid-2025 – which would be a first for the mountain bike scene.

There is currently no comparable, legal route here.

The background to the project is the initiative of the GSV, which sought discussions with the state forests in May 2020 - one and a half years after it was founded, explains Nussbaumer.

The position at Brenten has existed for 20 years.

But: “At the beginning of the Corona period, young people increasingly built large wooden structures.” The state forests were looking for those responsible for liability reasons and because of the dismantling.

“This became known to the GSV in the network,” says the chairman.

“We offered to find the builders, inform them and have the GSV demolish all the buildings on a voluntary basis.” The aim was to find a quick solution and take responsibility for the scene.

In the course of this, the club also asked the state forests for a conversation in order to point out the difficult situation for mountain bikers, who had no legal options for their sport.

“These very constructive discussions gave rise to the possibility of developing a legal route from the illegal route and bringing about control,” summarizes Nussbaumer.

No visitor magnet wanted

The project was later merged with the mountain bike steering group, which also considered official offers for mountain bikers.

The network, which was initiated by the Tegernsee Schliersee Alpine region (ATS, now REO), includes various groups from the areas of nature conservation, tourism, landowners and sport - including the GSV.

This means that the trail is “part of a larger effort” – with success, as Hausham’s mayor Jens Zangenfeind confirms.

“We have developed a really nice project.” Agreements have already been made between the forestry company, the community and the GSV.

The association takes over operational management and traffic safety duties, explains Zangenfeind.

As Nussbaumer adds, this includes impact mats and a rescue concept that was developed with the Hausham mountain rescue service.

Nevertheless, the trail should not be a “tourist-type magnet,” emphasizes Zangenfeind.

“We don’t want to do a lot of advertising with this facility.” Rather, the community wants to give athletes who are interested in trail rides an opportunity.

These activities should not take place on usual hiking trails and in forests, says Zangenfeind.

But: “I am of the opinion that if you ban something, you also have to create alternatives.” We succeeded here together.

GSV wants to involve young people

The GSV specifically wants to involve young people in the implementation in order to give them the opportunity to design “their own trail,” explains Nussbaumer.

All structures on the former trail would be demolished and rebuilt following standards and manuals.

The design is close to nature;

Rest phases over the winter are planned as well as overnight: use is only permitted from one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset.

However, the demands and fun factor should be kept high.

“Only an attractive route can steer.” nap
