The German Foundation for Monument Protection has once again pledged a significant amount of funding for the Reutberg monastery church.

The renovation is entering the home stretch.

- The German Foundation for Monument Protection is once again supporting the renovation of the Reutberg monastery church.

As the foundation announces, it is providing 75,000 euros for the interior repairs of the monastery church.

According to the announcement, the money will specifically go towards work on the shell of the nave with the Loreto Chapel, the western vestibule and the gallery of the sisters' choir.

Reutberg monastery church has great art-historical value

“The pilgrimage church of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary of the Reutberg Franciscan Monastery is a baroque hall church with a western tower,” says a spokesman for the foundation, describing the object.

The church is integrated as a south wing into the monastery complex surrounding a square inner courtyard.

“To the west, an octagonal tower with a curved dome from 1760 towers above it,” he continues.

“A Loreto chapel was integrated into the church as a choir in 1606.” The chapel is a copy of the Italian sanctuary in terms of construction and furnishings.

“The carved copy of the miraculous image is framed like the original and was touched and consecrated with the original.”

The western vestibule with the women's choir above takes up about half of the nave, according to the press release.

Most of the furnishings date from 1736. The ceiling painting above the gallery shows the Annunciation scene.

“The remaining ceiling paintings depict the invocations from the Lauritanian Litany.” On the high altar, which has been modified several times, there is a replica of the miraculous image of Our Lady of Loreto between two angels.

At Christmas, the Reutberg baby Jesus, who is said to have been brought from Bethlehem by Father Vischer in 1743, is exhibited in front of the southern side altar.”

Renovation of the Reutberg monastery church since 2021

The Reutberg Franciscan convent and the Franciscan hospice were closed in 1803 as part of secularization.

The church and monastery buildings were preserved.

King Ludwig I allowed the monastery to be rebuilt in 1835.

At the same time, a girls' school was set up, which existed from 1837 to 1958.

The renovation of the monastery church began in 2021 with the external repair of the tower.

The following year, the interior of the tower was repaired and the church roof structure was renovated.

The German Foundation for Monument Protection had already subsidized this second construction phase with 90,000 euros.

In 2023, the interior renovation of the monastery church began, which was closed for this purpose.
