She hunts, she fishes and she saves animals with her drone.

Hallbergmooser Stephanie Wollena in an interview about her unusual hobbies.

Hallbergmoos

– When Stephanie Wollena goes to work in the morning, she has often already worked for several hours.

The business graduate (38) and marketing expert at the Mövenpick Hotel in Hallbergmoos is a fisherman, hunter and drone pilot who is dedicated to rescuing fawns.

In an interview with the Freisinger Tagblatt, she explained what makes it so attractive and why the catch itself isn't that important.

Ms. Wollena, you are a fisherwoman and a hunter.

What came first?

Fishing.

My friend Sebastian Griese has been a fisherman since he was a child.

It was he who got me excited about it.

I started a fishing course in March 2020 and received my fishing license in June 2020.

Then I immediately joined the Fischerfreunde and am now co-youth leader and deputy treasurer.

Is sustainability an issue when fishing?

The first thing we do is teach the fishing youth how to collect garbage.

Your own, of course, but also what you find in nature.

In a training course we learned how to recycle materials.

This is what we want to do with the children and young people now.

For example, you can make a spoon (a lure, editor's note) out of old spoons.

Stephanie Wollena: “Fishing is like a short vacation”

Has the number of young fishermen increased under your direction?

I wouldn't say it's my fault.

The association day, which the community organized, brought us a lot of attention and popularity.

Incidentally, children from the age of 10 are allowed to fish when accompanied, and from the age of 14 they are allowed to go fishing alone. After passing the test, they can then apply for an adult fishing license and thus the annual ticket for adults.

What excites you about fishing?

It's just nice to be outside in nature.

It's like a short vacation in the evening after work.

Does it depend on the catch?

Of course you are happy about a nice catch.

But there are also days when I enjoy just sitting quietly and being in nature.

Sunrises or sunsets included.

How often do you go fishing?

You can't say that across the board, there are no regularities.

If the weather is good, we pack our things and go out.

With hunting, fishing has become a little less because you also have a lot to do in the area.

Learn again: After the fishing license comes the hunting license

How did you get into hunting?

My partner has been interested for a long time.

We then completed the certificate together in 2022.

So we are both still young hunters.

I have to admit that I wasn't drawn to that at first.

Mainly because it meant learning again.

Before cramming for my fishing license, I completed a two-year IHK training course to become an economics specialist - alongside working in the evening classes.

Hunting used to be a purely male bastion.

How do you explain the fact that more and more women are climbing to the top?

At the very beginning, I saw studying for a hunting license as an expansion of my knowledge, in addition to what I had already learned through fishing.

About the life cycles of animals, cycles in nature or trees.

You learn an incredible amount there.

During the training I realized that this was really an interesting thing.

Some may see it differently, but for me hunting is also a sustainable source of food.

Pulling the trigger for the first time – was it difficult?

You certainly think about it a lot beforehand: you want to address the animal correctly, as they say in technical jargon.

You observe and think about which animal it is.

This takes a while.

You usually visit the same perch because the animals are loyal to their location.

It's not about simply shooting game.

There are precise shooting schedules that help regulate the population and keep the ecosystem in balance.

(By the way: Everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

From hunting to fawn rescue

You are also a drone pilot for fawn rescue.

Yes, during the hunting school there was a query about who would like to proactively support fawn rescue.

At first I was a runner who tracked down the young animals in the grass at the call of the pilot.

In the same year, I acquired my drone certificate after an online course and started my second season as a drone pilot.

Is it difficult to control a drone?

No, not actually.

Anyone who has ever played a video game with a joystick should be able to handle it.

It happened very quickly for me.

The maps and routes are programmed in advance on the computer.

The drone usually flies automatically.

Only in difficult places, when trees or power lines protrude into the field, do you actively intervene on site.

Are your hobbies compatible with your work?

I receive a lot of support from my employer when it comes to fawn rescue.

If I didn't have a boss who would go along with it, I wouldn't be able to do it at all.

Or I would have to take a vacation.

I have a typical office job that starts between 7 and 8 am.

In the fawn rescue, the alarm clock rings between 3:30 a.m. and 4 a.m.

Depending on how many hectares you have to fly over, this takes a correspondingly long time.

You don't have all the fields in one corner, but you have to go to different places to mow the meadows.

It can happen that you don't get to work until 10 or 11 a.m.

What do you do on vacation – do you go fishing or hunting?

In fact, I also look forward to a two-week beach vacation, which we do once a year.

If we have a few days off, we spend our short vacation at the pond - with folding loungers in the open air.

Or we go hiking in the mountains.
