Munich is known for many things - including its award-winning restaurants.
Now the magazine “Der Feinschmecker” has named two restaurants among the best in Germany.
Munich – Like every year, the editorial team of the gourmet magazine “Der Feinschmecker” has published the list of the 500 best restaurants in Germany.
The list is headed by twelve restaurants, which “all offer unique top cuisine, perfect service and outstanding wines of the highest level,” as “Der Feinschmecker” reports.
Behind each one there are experienced top chefs who will continue to inspire with their creations in 2024.
Among these twelve best restaurants there are also two restaurants from Munich.
Third place among the best restaurants: JAN from Munich
At the forefront, in third place on the list of the 500 best restaurants in Germany, is JAN at Luisenstrasse 27. Named and run by the owner and star chef Jan Hartwig.
With his concept of new German cuisine, he and his team cook for up to 40 guests in the minimalist-looking restaurant.
Hartwig creates “refined, cosmopolitan” top products from predominantly local and sustainable quality products “on the basis of excellent classic craftsmanship,” is how the “Feinschmecker” jury explains their choice.

Star chef on Instagram: “It’s important that the picture has a certain imperfection”
Those interested can also admire the three-star chef's works on his Instagram account Jan Hartwig_Atelier.
In a conversation with the editor-in-chief of “Feinschmecker”, Deborah Gottlieb, Hartwig explains his love for detail.
What is particularly important to him in his photos is “that the image also has a certain imperfection.
That it is recognizable, that it is live from the serving area.” This makes it more tangible, more real and more authentic.
Despite his great success, the star chef is aware that it is only about him to a limited extent.
He almost only posts pictures of prepared plates and not of himself, he explains in the podcast interview.
“People want to see Jan Hartwig’s work and are not necessarily interested in Jan Hartwig as a person or what he looks like, and that’s completely okay.”
The JAN on Luisenstrasse in Munich was awarded third place in the top 12 best restaurants in Germany by “Der Feinschmecker” magazine.

10th place among the best restaurants in Germany: Tohru in the Schreiberei
The restaurant Tohru in the Schreiberei in the heart of Munich's old town is also one of the top 10 of the 500 best restaurants in Germany.
In the listed building on Burgstrasse, the two-time star chef Tohru Nakamura serves “a top-class tasting menu with ten courses” on the first floor, as “Der Feinschmecker” reports.
The exclusive gourmet restaurant impressed the jury with “a contemporary and casual feel-good atmosphere and masterful Japanese-inspired European top cuisine”.
Star chef wants to maintain his “handwriting and style”.
In an interview with Deborah Gottlieb, editor-in-chief of “Der Feinschmecker”, Tohru Nakamura explains that guests can also rediscover familiar things in the new restaurant: “We are of course keeping the hand and the style that has developed over the last few years.” The Japanese one Influence comes in, but in a calm form, as the star chef says.
For him, Japanese cuisine was omnipresent.
“When I opened the fridge as a child, there was miso paste, soy sauce, sweet mustard and butter next to each other.
That clearly influenced me to deal with it in this calm way.”
Before Tohru, the top chef cooked at Werneckhof in Munich for many years.
From 2020 to 2021 he was head chef at his own pop-up restaurant Salon Rouge by Tohru Nakamura.
He now runs the restaurant in the Schreiberei together with a partner.
Alexander Will has been the restaurant manager since February 2024.
Prices in top cuisine: exclusive menus for exclusive prices
However, if you want to dine in one of these temples of pleasure, you shouldn't be too stingy.
A menu in JAN costs between 275 and 320 euros, in Tohru you can get away a little cheaper - the menus here cost between 240 and 280 euros.
However, these are not unusual prices for the top class of gastronomy.
