The meadow in front of the playground on Gustavstrasse is expected to become a large construction site for two to two and a half years.

An underground basin is to be created there that will retain rainwater during heavy rain before the water flows at a reduced rate into the Säubach.

The municipal utility wants to start construction in the first half of 2024.

Penzberg – The underground pool should hold around 500 cubic meters of water, the equivalent of half a million liters.

The retention basin should be around 38 meters long, eight meters wide and three meters deep.

It will be built in the area of the meadow between Gustavstrasse and the trees at the playground.

When asked, municipal utility board member André Behre said that the basin would serve as an interim storage facility for rainwater before the water is released into the Säubach at a reduced rate.

During heavy rain, water should flow at reduced speed from the basin into the Säubach

At the same time as the retention basin, the municipal utilities are planning a rainwater sewer in Sigmundstrasse, Gustavstrasse and Philippstrasse (in addition to renewing the main combined sewer collection sewer).

Rainwater from sealed surfaces such as roofs and streets in the catchment area will be channeled into the Säubach.

However, because the Säubach would be overloaded during heavy rain, according to the municipal utilities, an intermediate storage facility, i.e. the basin, is necessary.

The meadow near the playground becomes a construction site for a long time

The meadow near the playground will therefore become a large construction site for a long time.

The footpath will also be closed during construction.

The municipal utilities announced that construction of the canal and basin is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2024.

Several construction crews should work at different points at the same time.

According to the municipal utilities, the expected construction time will be around two to two and a half years.

Although the pool will be underground, the result will not be completely invisible.

According to the plans and sketches, a wall is being built towards the Säubach, which at its highest point extends three to four meters down to the stream.

There, at the southeast corner, there will also be the outlet structure through which the rainwater will be discharged into the Säubach in a throttled manner.

At a building committee meeting last year it was said that the wall facing the meadow would be secured with a railing.

The wall itself should be planted with climbing plants towards the Säubach.

The footpath should be restored, as should the meadow with a slight slope towards Gustavstrasse and the run-off structure.

The number of public parking spaces on Gustavstrasse will be reduced

The committee had to decide what would happen to the public parking area on Gustavstrasse.

He chose the option in which at least four of the approximately 15 parking spaces would be restored after the construction work.

Mayor Stefan Korpan (CSU) explained about the building that the municipal utilities were not doing this because they had too much money left over, but because the water management office was obliged to do so.

“We can’t get away from it, we have to try to embed it and make the best of it.”

First of two expansion stages

According to the municipal utilities, the planned pool under the meadow between Gustavstrasse and the playground is the first of two expansion stages.

A second basin with the same dimensions and a volume of 500 cubic meters of water should follow right next to it if necessary.

The municipal utilities announced that the catchment area that is connected to the future stormwater sewer will be expanded in several steps in the medium and long term.

The retention volume of the first basin is initially sufficient.

As the catchment area expands, the second expansion stage becomes necessary.
