The authorities seem to have lost all control over the country.

While the armed gangs were holding most of their guards hostage in the prisons, the leaders of the country's two main gangs escaped on Sunday January 7 from their place of detention in Guayaquil, the economic capital, before an intervention by the law enforcement which aimed to transfer them to other penitentiaries.
