In Europe, major consolidation operations in air transport are in preparation.
But can they even come to an end?
As ticket prices have soared, travel agencies, tour operators and airports have sounded the alarm, saying that
"ongoing operations involving ITA, Air Europa, Sas and Tap will bring in the five biggest groups
(Lufthansa, Air France-KLM, IAG, Ryanair and easyJet)
to control 73.5% of the market compared to 47% almost twenty years ago.
This will significantly limit competition on thousands of air routes.”
This warning is issued at a good time, when the Directorate General for Competition of the European Commission, which is studying several files, is in the process of toughening its requirements.
And this not only on large operations, such as the takeover of Air Europa by IAG, but also on smaller ones, such as the takeover of the Italian ITA by Lufthansa, at 41% initially, before...
