In the coming years, Germany will also have to take up the challenge of passing on its family companies: one in three German business leaders is 60 or over and must therefore prepare to hand over the reins.

According to a recent survey by the Ifo institute and the Foundation of Family Businesses (SF), 43% of family SMEs plan to transfer a business or shares in the next three years.

“This is the case for half of large companies with more than 250 employees over the next three years,”

underlines Annette von Maltzan of Ifo.

A similar picture emerges in governance bodies, supervisory boards or administrations: according to the survey, only a quarter of companies can compensate for a departure thanks to a family member.

The statistics are dizzying when we know that the fabric of SMEs in the Mittelstand is the backbone of the continent's leading economy.
