Demos at the Munich Security Conference: Thousands gather for peace

Update from February 17th, 4:12 p.m.:

Thousands of people demonstrated on Saturday at the Munich Security Conference for peace in the world and against grievances in individual regions.

In the afternoon a rally for peace in Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia, took place at Odeonsplatz.

A speech by the mayor of the Ukrainian capital Kiev, Vitali Klitschko, was also expected.

First, a peace movement demonstration set off on Karlsplatz.

At least 1,000 people are said to have been there.

Later, a demonstration started at Königsplatz with people who belong to the politically right-wing, pro-Russian camp.

There were also demonstrations against human rights violations in Bangladesh and Ethiopia.

In the morning, demonstrators gathered in downtown Munich to speak out against the Islamic system of rule in Iran.

A police spokesman said the demonstrations were entirely peaceful until the afternoon.

Siko demonstration weekend starts with Iran protest: response to “killing machinery” demanded

Update from February 16th, 3:45 p.m.:

Protests and demonstrations will be a constant companion of the Munich Siko over the weekend.

The first major event took place on the sidelines of the conference on Friday: at Munich's Odeonsplatz, the Iranian opposition demonstrated against the regime in Tehran with, among other things, dozens of the national flags that were valid until 1979.

In an interview with FR.de

from

IPPEN.MEDIA,

the head of the Society of German-Iranians, Hossein Yaghobi, who was also present, called

for the enforcement of human rights in Iran, but also for a “decisive policy from the West”.

In particular, the so-called Revolutionary Guard must be placed on the terrorist list as the regime's “killing machine”.

The wish of the Iranians in Germany is a democratic, secular Iran, emphasized Yaghobi.

The opposition's self-defense struggle must be recognized.

On banners and leaflets, the demonstrators also criticized the “destructive role of the Iranian regime in triggering numerous crises in the region” – for example by supporting Houthi attacks in the Red Sea or rocket attacks on targets in Iraq, Syria and Pakistan or a US base in Jordan.

Peace activists and lateral thinkers: Siko in Munich is threatened with a turbulent demonstration weekend

Preliminary report:

Munich - armaments, the war in Ukraine, the situation in Gaza, dealing with Vladimir Putin's Russia, the future of NATO - all these topics are polarizing.

On Saturday (February 17th), the otherwise rather tranquil Munich will become the focal point: the 60th Security Conference will bring demonstrators of all different stripes onto the streets.

Powerful people from all over the world meet at the Bayerischer Hof Hotel to discuss, among other things, the wars and crises of the present.

In 2024, too, this will not only awaken the traditional protest of the peace movement.

An alliance with gangs in the lateral thinker scene is also on the way again.

The “Action Alliance against the NATO Security Conference” has clearly defined itself in advance.

“Anti-Siko Demo”: Co-organizer is optimistic

Last year the number of participants in the usual “anti-Siko demo” fell.

However , co-organizer Heinz Michael Vilsmeier was optimistic in an interview with

FR.de

- at least when it came to the response to the event.

In terms of content, he was concerned about a “war mood” in Germany.

Security conference in Munich: More than 5,000 emergency services

Munich police said a total of 18 demonstrations had already been reported in the area surrounding the event by Tuesday (February 13).

Other rallies would, among other things, have reference to the Middle East conflict or the situation in Iran.

They are planning to have more than 5,000 emergency services - but this is also to protect the conference participants and locations.

In addition to the Munich police, federal police and officers from other federal states will also be on duty to ensure safety for the conference participants and the population.

Munich's police vice-president Dibowski spoke of "increased abstract danger" due to the geopolitical situation.

However, there is no information about specific threats.
