The village shop in Gelting is still in a precarious situation.

At an extraordinary meeting, the comrades voted almost unanimously to keep the business.

Gelting – “SOS – village shop in need” was written in large letters on the flipchart behind Martin Goder.

The figures that the board member presented on Thursday evening in the Catholic parish hall demonstrated the precarious situation in which the cooperative store finds itself.

After two hours of discussion, the members came to a clear decision: They don't want to let the village shop they founded in 2008 die.

Village shop in Gelting is in a precarious situation - “2023 was a modest year”

“2023 was a modest year,” board member Goder began his report.

Increased purchasing, personnel and space costs caused the financial cushion to shrink to around 25,000 euros.

For comparison: in 2020 the village shop still had 35,000 in its account.

Since then it has been steadily going downhill.

Even austerity measures and special campaigns did not change this.

“There’s just too damn little left,” Goder summed it up.

The village shop would need an average of 273 euros more sales per day in order to survive, the Geltinger calculated to the 80 people present.

Making the outdoor area more attractive, carrying out purchases through a group, setting up a support association: the audience contributed numerous constructive suggestions.

But there were also critical tones: craftsmen would avoid the village shop during their snack break because shopping would take too long.

Dorfladen Gelting: Constructive suggestions at an extraordinary meeting - but also criticism

One person present was not impressed by the quality of the baked goods.

Ewald Kailberth complained that the selection of cheese had also shrunk.

The range should be more diverse again, said the Geretsrieder, who says he regularly shops in the village shop.

The member called on all comrades to take a closer look and shop there more often, even if you have to dig deeper into your pockets for regional products than for the goods in the supermarket.

Volker Reeh's management team had to listen to clear criticism.

“You don’t lack sales, you lack frequency.

“Nothing at all is being done,” criticized the cooperative member.

“If you don’t advertise, you die,” warned the businessman and economic advisor to the city council.

“This is an old principle in retail.” In order to stand out from the supermarket offerings, the store should also specialize.

“I miss that,” said the city councilor of the Geretsrieder List.

He recommended to the board that more members and founding an association would be the quickest way to get capital.

“If you don’t do that, you die.” The next speaker then stood up for the volunteer board of directors and the supervisory board.

Extraordinary General Meeting: Members answer the board's call for help

At the end of the extraordinary general meeting, the members answered the board's call for help.

They voted almost unanimously to keep the shop and center of social interaction in the village - only one comrade and one comrade refused their consent.

In order to increase the capital, the members want to subscribe for more shares and drum up advertising.

At the same time, the board wants to take measures to inform Geltingers better and in a positive way about the village shop.

The team also wants to sustainably bind the 200 or so comrades to the village shop.

It would be conceivable to introduce a subscription or a customer card.
