According to one observer, this ash tree, which characterizes the cityscape, was felled in the lower area of Bärenmühlweg in Weilheim “at night and fog, so to speak.”
The city gave them special consideration when expanding the road.

Excitement about a tree felling in Weilheim: Early on Saturday morning, an ash tree that dominated the cityscape was cut down without prior notice, and the city had actually made a special effort to preserve it.
Weilheim - Residents on Bärenmühlweg were dismayed at the weekend at the felling of a large ash tree on private property in the lower area of the residential street.
On Saturday morning at 6.30 a.m., the tree that characterizes the cityscape was surprisingly cut down, reports Stefan Emeis: “in the dark, so to speak,” as the Green city councilor adds – and without any city committee having been involved in it beforehand.
When the Bärenmühlweg was expanded a few years ago, “it was specially built around the root of this huge tree”.
The city emphasizes: “We have done our homework”
Manfred Stork, head of the city's building administration, confirmed this in response to a Tagblatt query: When expanding the road, they waived the transfer of land that was actually required and tried to protect the stately ash tree that stands close to the road.
“We did our homework.” The town hall was not informed before the felling, said Stork, “we knew nothing about it.”

Weilheim has no tree protection regulations
Because there is no development plan for the area on Bärenmühlweg, the ash tree was not explicitly protected.
And as is well known, the city of Weilheim does not have a tree protection ordinance.
“We probably need to think about a tree statute in Weilheim,” says Stefan Emeis, who acts as a consultant for the environment and climate in the city council: “Then - even if there were reasons for such a felling - it would have to be discussed at least once beforehand.”
According to Stork, the property on Bärenmühlweg, where the huge tree stood until last Saturday, can in principle be developed.
However, he is not aware of any current plans in this direction.
The topic of “trees” is also in the city council’s building committee
By the way: Various tree fellings will also be discussed at the meeting of the Weilheim Building Committee on Tuesday, February 20th, from 8:30 a.m. in the large meeting room of the town hall.
In the past few weeks, numerous trees in the city of Weilheim - as in many other municipalities - have been so badly damaged by heavy snowfall and storms that they had to be felled for traffic safety reasons.
