People in Munich often leave their cars at home and use their bikes or public transport.

This emerges from current evaluations.

Munich - There are fewer cars being driven in Munich, but more buses, trains and bicycles. This emerges from a current evaluation of the bicycle and vehicle counting points by the mobility department and the automatic passenger counting systems of the public transport system.

Munich residents are more likely to go without cars - even though the number of residents and vehicles is constantly growing

Although the population in Munich grew by around three percent between 2019 and 2023 and the number of registered motor vehicles rose by around five percent, according to figures from around 120 vehicle detectors in the city, the volume of vehicle traffic fell in 2023 compared to 2019 by around six percent.

The decline was greater inside (14 percent) and outside (seven percent) of the middle ring than on the ring (three percent).

When it comes to cycling, however, there has been a significant increase in the two years.

On average, there is an increase of around 17 percent in the number of available cycle time counting points, which are distributed throughout the entire Munich city area.

From January to August the increase compared to 2019 - with similar weather conditions - was even over 25 percent.

Although the weather in November and December 2023 was significantly rainier and snowier than in 2019, the number of cyclists also increased by around six percent in these months.

Transport turnaround in Munich: The number of passengers in local public transport also continues to rise

The number of passengers on local public transport returned to the level of 2019.

The passenger counting systems show that the number of passengers in 2023 will have reached an average of 93 percent of the pre-Corona value.

On individual days, passenger numbers have already been measured above pre-Corona values.

Mayor Dominik Krause: “The strong increase in cycling and the number of passengers on public transport is an extremely positive trend.

We must further strengthen this development by creating good offers.

For example, through attractive and reliable cycle times or with pleasant, safe cycle and walking paths.”

Mobility officer Georg Dunkel is satisfied: The trend shows that the city is on the right track

Mobility officer Georg Dunkel: “The trend from the first half of 2023 has been confirmed.

It clearly shows that we are on the right track and have already achieved a lot when it comes to the transport transition.

At the same time, there is still a lot to do: public transport needs to be further expanded, and we need attractive alternatives to owning a car, such as on-demand and shared mobility offers.

In addition, the situation for those who travel on foot in our city still needs to be improved in many places.

To this end, we are continuing to work on implementing the 2035 mobility strategy.”
