Michael Fietz is following in the footsteps of his father Herbert Fietz at the Vaterstetten fire department, who held the position of commander from 1990 to 1998.

The future deputies will be Maximilian Stiller and Felix Zöbisch.

Vaterstetten

- The annual general meeting of the volunteer fire department with over 200 members was marked by the regular election of commanders.

Since Julian Kuhn (first commander), Thilo Hasenöhrl and Martin Danner (deputy commanders) no longer stood for election after six years, a new appointment was necessary.

The new commanders now have to be confirmed at the local council meeting next Thursday.

Markus Idstein and Sarah Sachse were confirmed in their positions as representatives for the active team.

250 missions in one year

In his speech, the outgoing first commander Julian Kuhn highlighted the voluntary work carried out by the emergency team: the fire department completed 250 missions last year, including 79 fire operations, 151 technical assistance operations and seven ABC operations.

In addition, the volunteers spent a total of 11,411 hours on missions, exercises, youth work and training, but also on organizational and administrative tasks.

Thanks to families

Kuhn thanked the families and relatives of the volunteers who repeatedly “give up on their loved ones” to serve the community.

Successful events

Mayor Leonhard Spitzauer congratulated the newly elected commanders.

He emphasized not only the fire department's commitment to the operations, but also to successful events, such as the raising of the maypole and the solstice bonfire in the new community park, which would involve the entire community.

Above-average proportion of women

The mayor also drew attention to another special feature: the above-average proportion of women in the Vaterstetten volunteer fire department.

It underlines how modern and forward-looking the defense force is.

Active youth group

The 2023 youth group was very well staffed with 20 members, according to the report.

In addition, several young people were allowed to go into active service for the New Year.

Need for information about volunteer work

District fire councilor Andreas Heiß paid the volunteers and the outgoing commanders “the greatest respect”.

He also emphasized that there is still a lot of need for information about the organization of the fire service.

Many citizens, especially in large communities like Fatherstetten, are not even aware “that a core element of rescue services and disaster control is based on the voluntary, voluntary and unpaid commitment of fellow citizens.”

Incriminating petty calls

Several speakers at the meeting drew critical attention to the trend that more and more military deployments are being caused by minor emergency calls.

A few years ago it would have been hardly conceivable that the emergency number 112 would be dialed because of a branch lying on a sidewalk.

Such emergency calls are now becoming more and more common.

Here, the representatives of the fire department and politics appealed for citizens to take on more personal responsibility in order not to unnecessarily burden and tie down the volunteer emergency services outside of real emergencies.
