The city of Germering recently performed poorly in the ADFC bicycle climate test.

Now those responsible should act.

Germering

– an overall grade of 4.3 means you barely got through school.

In the ADFC's bicycle climate test, which is carried out every two years and most recently from September to November 2022, the city of Germering came last in the district.

Reason enough for the SPD parliamentary group to follow up.

By unanimous decision in the Environment and Urban Development Committee, the city is now asked to analyze the result.

At the same time, ways should be found to better support the ADFC in its climate test.

This is intended to achieve higher participation.

Mobility officer Sven Gröting made an initial commitment from the city.

In the future, the bicycle climate test will be advertised on the homepage, as well as in the city's social media presence.

Daniel Liebetruth (SPD) assessed this positively: “It is important that we have a lot of good data.” With a higher number of participants than the 152 in 2022, the attractiveness of the ADFC bicycle test could also be increased.

“So pushing advertising is a good idea,” said Liebetruth.

However, the SPD had clearly warned of a need for action in its application, which was drafted in June of last year.

In particular, it did so in areas where the city had underperformed.

These included, among other things, general safety when cycling, parking illegally on cycle paths and traffic light switching.

Those in charge of the city didn't want to let it go.

“It is a subjective assessment that cannot be influenced in many respects,” explained Gröting in the meeting document.

There are also a lot of 30 km/h zones in the city.

In other places, such as Untere Bahnhofstrasse, the conditions did not allow for separate protective strips.

Pictograms were used to counteract this.

When checking illegal parking, Gröting pointed out the city's human resources, with the corresponding financial consequences.

Three people would pay particular attention to illegal parking on cycle paths.

“We are already doing our best,” said Gröting.

This also applies to traffic light switching.

There are few combinations here that, in the city's opinion, make coordination with cyclists sensible.

This is particularly true if the traffic lights are too far apart.

The city also has some catching up to do when it comes to assessing the “bicycle-friendly community” seal.

It will probably not receive the seal until 2025.

In October 2023, inspectors criticized, among other things, the traffic management at roundabouts.

Michael Sigmund, as the local representative, commented this way at the time;

“Germering didn’t fail, but he didn’t pass either.”
