Grucking - The Quality Grain Producers Association has a good 2023 harvest.

Experts inform the 80 people present about the global grain trade.

Grucking – The quality grain producer association in the Erding district has 222 members.

Around 80 of them came to the annual general meeting at the Gasthaus Rauch to find out about the 2023 harvest balance and news from their industry.

An expert from the Bavarian Farmers' Association also gave insights into the global wheat business.

Daniel Gschlößl, managing director of the producer association, announced harvest figures from 2023 to the farmers who cultivate a contract area of around 2,000 hectares in the district.

2,500 tons of brewing wheat, 3,000 tons of durum wheat, 1,000 tons of spring malting barley and 500 tons of winter malting barley were produced, but less spelled compared to previous years.

“We are proud,” says Gschlößl, “that we have grown 600 hectares of durum wheat.

The good development seems to continue to trend upwards, although prices are under strong pressure.”

The Durum variety continues to be lucrative and the cover price per hectare is good.

However, he pointed out, wheat is providing less and less protein, which is due to changes in fertilizer regulations.

He suggested that future fertilization be quality-oriented and that only good wheat varieties be grown.

“Retailers are willing to pay more for better quality.”

The brewing wheat contract model with Erdinger Weißbräu also ran successfully in 2023 (we reported).

The only attempt to grow rice near Grucking has so far failed to produce a harvest.

Gschlößl also introduced two new mill partners: Firstly, a company near Mannheim was acquired for durum durum wheat processing, which is one of the largest mill associations in Europe.

In addition, a project with oats can now be started at a mill in Ulm that specializes in this variety as well as spelled and emmer.

When he asked the group what farmers could imagine as a further alternative, sunflowers and rapeseed were mentioned above all.

In the latter case, only large quantities are interesting, “Ukraine in particular supplies a lot of this”.

In his outlook, the managing director mentioned that BayWa wanted to continue marketing the brewing wheat; 4,000 tons of the previous 5,000 tons yield had already been sold.

He sees further contract options with a staggered quantity for acceptance; further information on this will follow in March.

BBV speaker Anton Huber gave a look behind the scenes of international wheat trading.

“Wheat is still the most important fruit.

But its price is not that high right now because Russia, as the strongest producer, is flooding the markets.

In addition, 33 percent of the wheat is in storage, almost two thirds of it in China.

The EU is also a strong exporter, but we would have to secure more stocks.

Our most important customers are North African countries such as Morocco, Egypt and Nigeria, but we could export even more.”

Due to the war in Ukraine and the difficult sea situation at the Suez Canal, there is a drop in deliveries of around 40 percent.

The expert sees a need for imports of corn, which comes primarily from Ukraine and Brazil.

But here too, China would store around 70 percent of the world's stocks.

He sees producer groups as very important.

Finally, Anton Mitterer from the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forestry informed that fertilizer monitoring is to be introduced from 2025 and that the four percent set-aside for more nature conservation could soon be compensated for by the cultivation of special fruits under new EU regulations The federal government still has to give the green light.
