Brussels - The foreign ministers of the EU states have decided to start a new military operation to secure merchant shipping in the Red Sea and neighboring sea areas.

On Friday (February 16), the federal government cleared the way for the Bundeswehr to participate in an EU mission to protect sea routes from attacks by the Houthi militia in Yemen. 

The frigate “Hessen” set off for the Mediterranean at the beginning of the month.

The warship with around 240 soldiers on board is expected to take part in the EU mission until the end of April, subject to the Bundestag mandate.

According to the German Navy, a sister ship will be deployed in the second half of the year.
