Domestic violence is significantly increasing (+19.4%) in 2023 in Haute-Corse, as is road insecurity with 22% more deaths on the roads, the prefect of the department and the prosecutor of Bastia announced on Monday .

for prefect Michel Prozic, affected 736 victims in 2023, compared to 593 in 2022, and had already increased by 17% between 2021 and 2022. These increases are
“probably explained by a liberation of the victims' words
,” said the prefect.

after he admitted to having fatally injured his 86-year-old mother with a knife in Antisanti (Haute-Corsica).

in Haute-Corse, underlined the prefect, indicating that with a total of 7,204 offenses (+0.4%) recorded in 2023, or 40 offenses per 1,000 inhabitants, Haute-Corse has
“a low level of delinquency”
compared to the rest of mainland France.
366 bodily accidents and 22 deaths in 2023
However, seizures of narcotics have exploded (+345%) with 146 kg seized in 2023, compared to 33 kg in 2022, including 104 kg of cannabis resin and herb, 14 kg of cocaine and 500 g of heroin.
“These seizures showed us that there were now extremely structured criminal networks transporting narcotics to the department
,” analyzed the Bastia public prosecutor, Jean-Philippe Navarre.
“A number of accidents and sometimes involuntary homicides on the road are caused by drivers under the influence of narcotics
,” he also underlined.
Haute-Corse thus counted 366 bodily injury accidents (+12%) and 22 deaths (+22%) in 2023 - including 1/3 motorcyclists -, with 90% of accidents due to human factors, notably excessive speed and driving. under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Weapons seizures, numbering 318, also increased by 28%.
Last year, the authorities counted 13 complaints filed by elected officials in the department, which were the subject of
“particular attention”

Social and tax fraud represented 11.5 million euros, with the tax services having recovered 6.5 million euros from professionals and individuals.
Justice, for its part, seized 2.04 million euros in criminal assets in 2023. Over the year, there were seven homicides, as in 2022, and five attempted homicides (3 in 2022) on the department,
