It has long been a cherished tradition that the Kaltenberg Castle Brewery invites the mayors of the district to the “Royal Strong Beer Tap” in the rustic Ritterschwemme at the beginning of Lent.

Kaltenberg – Although the “Royal tapping” is not true.

The completely middle-class community leader of Geltendorf has the honor of tapping the first barrel of Kaltenberg Ritterbock.

Mayor Robert Sedlmayr needed exactly two strokes for the noble material to flow.

“Here’s to a peaceful Lent” toasted by host Luitpold Prinz von Bayern, brewery managing director Harald Stückle, sales manager Richard Sturm and of course Robert Sedlmayr.

Created by chance

Prince Luitpold, great-grandson of Bavaria's last King Ludwig III, recalled that around 40 years ago his master brewers created the legendary dark “Ritterbock” by chance, which, with an alcohol content of nine percent, is one of the strongest bock beers in Bavaria.

Its high original wort content of 21 percent makes it a full-bodied “triple bock” and the five-month storage period gives it a special balance.

Real beer connoisseurs like to combine this drinking experience with a hearty dish such as roast pork, which was served after the official part.

The clever advertising slogan for the historical knight's armor on every corner is fitting: “He even oils the armor”.

Bundestag member Michael Kiessling had to smile at the prince's quip. Here at the beer table with a knight's buck, some problems could be solved more easily than at the security conference in Munich.

It is known that in the monasteries strong beer used to be used as liquid food during Lent.

Archabbot Wolfgang Öxler from the neighboring Archabbey of St. Ottilien wanted to try it out, and he and a few colleagues were happy about the invitation.

The evening in the Ritterschwemme was accompanied musically by the Penzing Music Association.
