February has been extraordinarily mild in Germany so far.
But at the weekend the temperatures will fall rapidly.
Snow fans can hope for a comeback of winter in the lowlands too.
The week started gray on Monday with a sea of clouds and rain primarily in the northern and western halves of Germany.
On Tuesday and Wednesday the precipitation will move further east, while the weather will clear up somewhat in the southwest.
The maximum temperatures are a mild 14 degrees, according to the German Weather Service (DWD).
But anyone who thinks that the winter will end unspectacularly could be very wrong, according to the meteorologists.
Things get particularly crazy in the Alps.
According to the DWD, the sun initially attracts attention there in the middle of the week.
After that, something is brewing in southern Germany.
Winter makes a comeback in February with “pretty wet snow.”
“From Thursday, heavy, continuous snowfall will begin in and around the Alps,” writes “Focus”.
This means significant amounts of fresh snow of up to one meter in Switzerland and up to half a meter in Austria.
But in Germany too, up to 30 centimeters of new snowflakes are falling.
The snowfall line drops steeply to up to 500 meters, as the DWD writes.
According to “Focus”, there will also be “pretty wet” snow again in the southern low mountain ranges.
In addition, heavy rain is moving across the Alps, sometimes bringing heavy rainfall.
According to the DWD, there is also a risk of a storm alarm at higher altitudes and in mountainous areas.
Snowfall even at low altitudes - Hurricane Ute brings cold air
At the weekend, the snow hurricane called “Ute” will expand into a huge low-pressure complex over the North Atlantic, as “Focus” writes.
In addition to storm winds and a lot of precipitation, this also brings cold air towards Europe.
Even if it really didn't look like it in the last few weeks and February even mutated into the "early spring month" with temperatures up to 18 degrees, snow fans could still make peace with the current winter at the end of the month.
You can even have legitimate hope that the white flakes will make a comeback.
On Saturday night, the snowfall line in Germany will drop to 300 meters, which means it could turn white again in the south and east of the country, even in the lowlands.
