A fire broke out on an industrial wasteland in Dresden.
The state security agency is involved in the investigation - the site was once a subcamp of a concentration camp.
Dresden - After a fire on an old industrial site near the Dresden-Zschachwitz S-Bahn station, state security intervened in the investigation.
There was once a subcamp of the Flossenbürg concentration camp on the site.
It is unclear whether the story is related to the fire, said police spokesman Marko Laske on Monday.
However, the fire was most likely started.
This was revealed by investigations by a fire investigator.
A warehouse on the site burned on Sunday night.
Unknown perpetrators had probably set fire to various rubbish in the wasteland, as Laske said.
Nobody got hurt.
The amount of damage cannot yet be quantified.
According to the fire department, the extinguishing work was difficult.
The building was in danger of collapsing and could not be entered.
Because of the special background of the site, state security was involved in the investigation.
That doesn't necessarily mean that there was a political background to the arson, said the police spokesman.
He is being investigated in all directions - and the state security agency is examining a possible political background.
A few hours before the fire, a Dresden voters' association announced on X, formerly Twitter, that it was committed to preserving the area as a memorial site.
On Monday, the fire department responded to the industrial wasteland again.
Fire and smoke came out again from the remains of the roof, a spokesman said.
Because of the way the roof is constructed, it is difficult to get to all the fire spots.
The technical relief organization should open the roof so that the emergency services can extinguish the fire better.
According to the police, embers that flared up again were probably responsible for the new fire.
According to the Flossenbürg Memorial, the Zschachwitz subcamp was operated from October 1944 to April 1945.
At that time, almost 1,000 prisoners would have had to work for Mühlenbau und Industrie AG (MIAG) and, among other things, produce assault guns.
At least 80 of them died.
The memorial was informed about the fire on Monday, said spokesman Julius Scharnetzky.
However, the former subcamp is not part of the memorial.
