A broadcaster makes it possible: Where stork “Hui Buh” from Raisting is on the move can be tracked on an online portal.

There is also news from the stork colony in Raisting.

Raisting - Among the many storks that belonged to the largest white stork breeding colony in southern Bavaria in Raisting last year, “Hui Buh” is a special one: the female, born in 2019 at Affenberg in Salem (near Lake Constance), carries a transmitter.

And this makes it possible to view your flight routes and the last registered position on the online portal “Movebank”.

Wolfgang Bechtel, stork representative of the State Association for Bird and Nature Conservation (LBV), knows through this research opportunity that “Hui Buh” left the Pähl/Raisting area on December 3rd during the onset of winter.

The stork then flew southwest over Friedrichshafen and Radolfzell on Lake Constance.

“From December 6th it was west of Zurich for a long time and has now been west of Bern since January 19th,” said Bechtel at the beginning of February.

“I’m excited to see what happens next – but she probably won’t fly to Spain.”

The current position of the transmitter stork is recorded every midday at 12 p.m

The stork expert turned out to be right.

This is what the latest data from “Movebank” reveals.

The current position of the transmitter stork is recorded every midday at 12 p.m.

The location can then be viewed online some time later - according to Bechtel, in the evening or the following day;

it is marked on the map with a green cross.

And “Hui Buh” is now back where a particularly large number of her stays have already been recorded: in the Raisting area.

“Movebank” has been revealing this since February 13th.

The animal, which has the same name as the castle ghost from the books, had previously come from its location west of Bern to Raisting within two days, said Bechtel.

Data from the female stork has been recorded since 2019

The stork's data recorded since 2019 shows that it has never flown to Africa, but has flown - via Montpellier on the French Mediterranean coast - to Zaragoza in northern Spain (see movebank.org, search "Affenberg", then click on the plus sign Open animal list).

In Raisting, “Hui Buh” could be found in the horst next to the fireplace in the local museum in 2023.

She had a young one there with a stork without a ring (i.e. of unknown origin).

Bechtel observed that the stork has now returned to this spot.

He assumes that she will nest there again - probably with the same partner as last year.

Most recently, 35 storks were counted in Raisting

During a visit to Raisting on Friday, Bechtel counted 35 storks on the nests at lunchtime.

He says they are in the process of securing their nesting sites for the new breeding season.

Last year there were nests of a total of 26 pairs of storks in Raisting.

The large birds had 77 young, which corresponds to a quota of around three chicks per nest.
