Hard evidence of rape and sexual violence in the evacuated hotels/Knesset channel
The Committee for the Advancement of the Status of Women and Gender Equality discussed this morning (Monday) the prevention of sexual violence in the evacuees' centers, during which the Ministry of Welfare revealed 75 cases of sexual assault that occurred in hotels as well as 80 cases of domestic violence.
The discussion is the second one held by the committee on the subject.
The representative of the police, the head of the organization's sex crimes unit, updated that so far nine cases of sex crimes have been opened in which the victim is evacuated.
In two other cases the suspect is evacuated.
In one case, the victim was evacuated but does not live in the evacuee's residence.
There were a total of 24 sexual offense cases in the evacuee hotels from October until yesterday, including those unrelated to the evacuees.
"I couldn't understand. How come last time you said we had 36 complaints, where did they go? After the discussion, I received phone calls from teachers who said the situation is much worse," commented the chair of the committee, Pnina Tamnu Shata. "The previous discussion was about sexual offenses in the family.

The police representative added that after the segmentation made following the previous discussion, it emerged that 24 domestic violence cases were opened in the hotels where the victim was evacuated.
Despite the extent of the exposure that was revealed, the police were only able to report 12 cases of sexual offenses and the Ministry of Health knows of two women who were sexually assaulted and ended up in an acute center.
"The state must do everything so that the protection of the evacuees is at the highest level," said the chair of the committee, MK Tamano Sheta.

Tamno Shata also raised before the committee the demand from those in charge of the issue to "mark" red hotels with a violent atmosphere and climate.
"I received a call after the previous discussion that revealed to me that the situation of sexual offenses is much more serious than reported," she said.
"The phenomenon of sexual exploitation of the evacuees is something we should have thought about in advance," claimed MK Limor Son Har Melech who participated in the discussion. "We should have introduced protected workshops.
