The work that started in 2017 and it is not known when it will end: what is needed for the train to arrive from González Catán to Constitución

2024-02-19T10:33:05.379Z

Highlights: The Belgrano Sur Viaduct is part of a set of three railway projects in Buenos Aires. The first was inaugurated in May 2019, with an extension of 3.9 kilometers from Dorrego to Congreso. The San Martín station, with a length of 5 km, extends from the Palermo station to the Paternal station. It is expected that once completed, the viaduct will benefit approximately 65,000 daily passengers. The project has approved international financing and was awarded to the contracting company Dycasa.

It began with the Miter and San Martín train viaducts, which were inaugurated in 2019. It has already passed through three governments.

The

Belgrano Sur Viaduct

, one of the projects launched during the government of Mauricio Macri, has added delays and raised expectations and controversies since its conception

in 2015.

An initiative aimed at revitalizing the Belgrano Sur railway and strengthening connectivity between the Roca train terminal in Constitución and the southern suburbs to La Matanza.

But the work continues to go through obstacles and

the timing of its completion is still uncertain

.

Since its announcement in 2015, the viaduct has been the subject of great interest and analysis in the Argentine capital.

Its main objective: to modernize and enhance the connectivity of the Belgrano Sur railway.

In addition to completing a project that is decades old, its purpose is to eliminate level crossings that are an urban obstacle that generates delays and pollution.

In addition to

improving connectivity and adding a transportation alternative for thousands of passengers.

Despite being part of a set of three railway projects, the Belgrano Sur viaduct

is the only one that has not yet been completed,

unlike those of the

Miter and San Martín trains.

The first was inaugurated in May 2019, with an extension of 3.9 kilometers from Dorrego to Congreso.

On the other hand, the San Martín station, with a length of 5 km, extends from the Palermo station to the Paternal station, and was inaugurated in July of the same year, although without the

Paternal and Villa Crespo stations, which only opened the year. past

.

The southern Belgrano, whose work also began in 2017, encountered obstacles that led to stopping work in certain sectors.

One of the significant modifications, and the last obstacle, involved

changing the route of the viaduct to pass through the auxiliary court of the Barracas Central Club

, located between Olavarría and Luna, and near Villa Zavaleta.

This is nothing less than the club in which Claudio Tapia, current head of the AFA, was president.

Initially, it had been planned to surround the club property with the railway structure, but due to engineering considerations, it was determined that the viaduct should pass over the club grounds.

This generated the need for

compensation for the sports entity,

which requested land with similar characteristics, which resulted in the pause of work in this sector until an

adequate solution

was found .

Meanwhile, work continued in other areas, such as those adjacent to the Roca line tracks.

The reactivation of the work took place in November 2023. Until the administration changed.

Despite the uncertainty about the completion date and although it has once again entered the analysis stage, the project continues.

According to the Secretary of Transportation, in the last work certification,

progress of 66% has been achieved in the basic work and 53.43% with the corresponding amendments

.

Currently, assembly work is underway and the purchase of rails from China has been confirmed.

"The agencies and the State were recently modified, which is why the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of Economy are analyzing, together with the technical teams, the status of the work, the resources and the necessary tools that would be required in the case. to advance with the tasks to complete its construction," added sources from the Ministry of Transportation.

The project, which has approved international financing, is being executed by the Secretariat and was awarded to the

contracting company Dycasa

.

It is expected that once completed, the viaduct will not only improve the connectivity of Belgrano Sur, benefiting approximately

65,000 daily passengers

.

It will generate connectivity with subway line C and the bus lines that stop in Constitución.

Also, with the Roca line trains.

Currently, the Belgrano Sur reaches the elevated Sánez station,

since the old capital, Buenos Aires, is closed.

This station could be inaugurated even before the section is completed.

And here appears another factor that can generate new delays.

It is still not clear how the roads will enter Constitución.

In principle, the new line will use the space on platforms 1 and 2, that is, those facing west.

But that implies

important work at the railway terminal and it has not yet been defined how it will be done.

When it comes to fruition, according to specialist estimates, the number of users could grow to 100,000.

The viaduct will extend to Brandsen Street, where it will connect with Constitución beach and connect with González Catán (La Matanza) on its G branch, and Marinos del Crucero General Belgrano (Merlo) on its M branch.
