Ever since OpenAI debuted its ChatGpt chatbot in November 2022, exploding the world's interest in the technology and sparking a race for artificial intelligence, the company has sought to block other companies from using the acronym 'Gpt' (GenerativePre-trained Transformer), protecting it with an exclusive.

But the United States Patent Office (Uspto) - as the specialized site Gizmodo writes - has rejected the patent twice, the last one a few days ago considering it too generic to make it for exclusive use by a company.

“The term 'GPT' is commonly used in relation to software that features AI question-and-answer technology,” the USPTO wrote, adding that it rejected OpenAI's application so as not to stifle competition in the sector in favor of a popular brand and already rich.

According to rumors from the New York Times a few days ago, the company led by Sam Altman has reached a valuation of up to 80 billion dollars, tripling its valuation in less than 10 months.

It is now one of the world's most valuable tech start-ups, behind TikTok owner ByteDance and SpaceX.

"Companies and competitors must be free to use descriptive language when talking about their goods and services in advertising and marketing materials," the Patent Office added.

This is the second time the agency has denied OpenAI's request to register a trademark for 'Gpt'.

   But the company can appeal.
