A new book sheds light on the relationship between King Charles and the Queen.

It wasn't until Charles was in his 50s that the relationship changed.

Norfolk – King Charles (75) is known as a loving grandfather.

He chose his current location at his country estate in Sandrigham so that he could see the children of his son Prince William (39) when they were at Anmer Hall in Norfok.

He spent little time with his grandparents and even less time with his mother - at least when she became queen at just 26 years old.

The current monarch was just four years old at the time.

Ingrid Seward: “She was a mother from a different generation”

“I think Charles longed to be hugged by his mother, but he only got that kind of affection from his nannies,” says author Ingrid Seward, 76, in an interview with

about her new book “My Mother and I”, which tells the very personal story of the king and his late mother Queen Elizabeth II (96, † 2022).

She also belonged to a generation and class that routinely left the day-to-day care of small children to domestic staff.

However, King Charles was “sensitive” in his youth.

Playing, first steps, praise and punishment were the responsibility of the nannies.

When Elizabeth II unexpectedly became queen at the age of 26, it was over.

“Then the children were taken away from her.

“Not literally, but in spirit, because she was so busy being the queen,” Seward says.

One should not forget: the young woman had to assert herself in what was then a man's world, she adds.

“She [Elizabeth II] was the queen, but in later life she was his [King Charles'] mother

Caring for the children took a back seat.

But that was completely normal for noble families back then.

When asked whether the Queen was more Charles's mother or his queen, Seward replies: "She was the queen, but in later life she was his mother."

She thought he was doing great work for disadvantaged children with his Prince Charles Foundation.” It made her proud, but it took a while before she showed him that, the biographer says.

King Charles himself has been criticized as a father, but Sewald paints a completely different picture: “Charles was very close to his children, especially Harry.

William wanted to be with Mom, but Harry loved doing things with Charles." They roamed the gardens at Highgrove, learning about plants, sharing an enthusiasm for the military and horses, she explains. "Charles was an indulgent father "But when his relationship with Diana collapsed so badly, Diana's weapon was to take the children."

Charles organized a polo trip with the children and Princess Diana (36, † 1997) went shopping with them.

Prince Harry (39) expresses his side in his memoirs.

He picked on King Charles and loudly expressed his sarcasm: “Thanks for the free therapy session.” Meanwhile, he also adopted a conciliatory tone.
