It is the oldest association in the old district of Wolfratshausen: Founded as a predecessor of neighborhood assistance, the Endlhausen veterans and warriors association is celebrating its 190th birthday this year.

Endlhausen - In 1834, a time when there were neither fire departments nor other rescue services in many places, neighborhood help in the villages was more important than ever.

For exactly this reason, the Endlhausen Veterans and Warriors Association was founded on November 11, 1834.

This year the association is celebrating its 190th birthday.

Chairman Alfons Aichler (59) took this special day as an opportunity to look back on the history of what, according to Aichler, is now the oldest club in the old Wolfratshausen district.

Endlhausen Veterans and Warriors Association: Members committed themselves to helping neighbors

Many old protocols and files have been lost over the decades.

“Unfortunately, a lot of what our association has achieved in the past remains unclear.” Nevertheless, the founding date can be dated to November 11, 1834.

To this day, the prerequisite for admission is a former soldier or military service.

“At the time of its founding, the members also committed themselves to helping their neighbors,” says Aichler.

“That was actually the ultimate social idea.”

Specifically, comrades and their families who got into trouble unharmed should be helped: for example in the event of farm fires, floods - or if a husband did not return from the war and left his wife and children behind.

The 59-year-old chairman knows one more thing for sure: “His” club was in great demand back then, even far beyond the borders of Endlhausen.

Around 1800 the association included several communities at the time, including Dietramszell, Ascholding, Deining and Sauerlach.

It wasn't until the 1980s that the other towns left and founded their own veterans' associations.

Aichler can only speculate as to why the group came into being in Endlhausen: “Perhaps a person with leadership strength who took charge of the founding came from Endlhausen.”

A good century later, the First World War broke out, with thousands upon thousands of deaths.

Almost 20 years later, the Second World War began.

Aichler explains: “Nobody could have guessed this development at the time it was founded.”

During wartime, the association's priorities also changed: for example, the task of providing deceased comrades with a dignified burial became important.

In order to create a monument to the fallen, the Marian column in front of the Endlhauser parish church was unveiled and inaugurated in 1905.

The names of the deceased were carved on the pillar.

To this day, the club's flag is also very important.

“This goes back to earlier times of war,” explains Aichler.

During battles, the ensign used it to move ahead.

In the event of his death, the piece of cloth was passed on.

“Once the flag was gone, it was over.” A special honor fell to the so-called flag maidens at the ceremonial flag consecration in 1920.

Among other things, they carried the banner to the altar.

Veterans and warriors association turns 190: To this day there are several parallels from its founding days

There are further parallels from the founding days: “The club members still step in for each other and help each other,” explains the 59-year-old proudly.

The annual memorial event on Whit Monday is of great importance for all veterans: a wreath is laid at the memorial to commemorate all those who died and went missing during the wars.

The currently suspended conscription and the fact that there was no war in Germany for a long time are having an impact on the club.

The association currently consists of 91 members - including a 97-year-old war veteran.

The youngest is around 40 years old.

Alfons Aichler therefore looks to the future of the club “with a question mark”.

But he emphasizes: “The coming decades are secured.”

The veterans plan to properly celebrate their 190th birthday in early summer.

In the form of a joint festival weekend with the fire department and the boys' club.

Aichler hopes that the club will continue to exist in the distant future.

“It has a great tradition in the town.

That's why it would be a shame if we had to break up at some point."
