The payment card for asylum seekers keeps the traffic light government busy.

The Greens are currently blocking - party leader Lang makes it clear why.

Berlin – The issue of payment cards for asylum seekers is currently causing a heated atmosphere within the traffic light coalition.

The core of the debate is about the question of whether federal regulation is necessary for the launch of the card.

The Greens, who consider the existing legal options to be sufficient, have so far opposed this request from the two coalition partners SPD and FDP.

Green Party leader Ricarda Lang (30) now went into detail regarding her party's blockade stance in an interview with

BILD

.

Lang cannot understand criticism of the blocking of the law on payment cards

In the report mentioned, Lang tries to take the wind out of the sails of the efforts to install a new law for payment cards and refers to current implementation efforts: “In reality, it is already underway.

The tendering process for the 14 countries that have not yet launched it is already underway.” Accordingly, in the eyes of the Green politician, according to BILD,

all

the necessary requirements and options are already in place.

Her parliamentary group leader Irene Mihalic recently made a similar statement to the

editorial network Germany

 (

RND

) using almost the same wording.

It was only at the end of January that 14 of the 16 federal states agreed to introduce the payment card for asylum seekers and to complete this process by summer 2024.

With the new card, people who have fled to Germany will be able to purchase things for their daily needs.

At the same time, those responsible for politics hope to prevent money from being transferred to smugglers or families in the respective countries of origin.

Hamburg was the first federal state to start distributing the card last Thursday (February 15th).

Green Party leader sees “theoretical debate” around payment cards

Curiously, it is not the practical implementation itself that bothers Ricarda Lang about the introduction of the new payment card.

The only thing the 30-year-old and her party would like to prevent in any case is the formulation and adoption of a new law.

“We have to get away from theoretical debates and get into action,” demands Lang, according to

BILD

.

This attitude is currently causing the other two traffic light parties to shake their heads and sometimes even get angry.

FDP Vice President Wolfgang Kubicki recently even threatened to break the coalition if the Greens continued to torpedo the legislative proposals.

SPD General Secretary Kevin Kühnert referred to the existing procedural agreement at state level and the federal government's assurance that the new payment card would be legally supported.

He therefore expects that all three government parties “now stand by this compromise.”
