Navalny's death casts a shadow over Putin's recent promotions.

The appointment of torturer Boyarinew as colonel general is particularly causing a stir.

Moscow – As soon as Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny is dead, Russian President Vladimir Putin promotes his personal torturer.

The deputy head of the FSIN prison authority, Valery Boyarinev, who was promoted to colonel general of the Interior Ministry, was responsible for the torture of Navalny in prison, wrote the director of the Anti-Corruption Fund (FBK) founded by Navalny, Ivan Zhdanov, on Telegram.

The Kremlin previously made the presidential decree regarding Boyarinew's new position public.

“This must be understood as Putin’s open reward for the torture,” Zhdanov wrote.

In addition to Boyarinew, three other correctional officers were promoted to the rank of general.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov denied any connection between Navalny's death and the promotions.

These were a completely normal occurrence, he claimed.

Harassment and torture: Boyarinew was personally responsible for harassment of Navalny

In July 2023, during a court hearing against Alexei Navalny, Boyarinew's order became known to restrict the opposition politician's ability to purchase food and daily necessities.

Normally, prisoners can use their money to supplement their own meager rations at the prison store.

According to Zhdanov, the newly appointed colonel general was also responsible for further harassment of Navalny.

Alexei Navalny died on Friday (February 16) in the prison camp with the unofficial name “Arctic Wolf” in the Siberian Arctic region of Yamal.

The politician, weakened by repeated solitary confinement, is said to have collapsed while walking around the icy prison yard and died despite attempts to resuscitate him.

But there are already numerous theories surrounding the actual cause of death.

Guessing about Navalny's cause of death: expert speaks of "political murder"

While a medic reported bruises and bruises on Navalny's body, a suspected fellow prisoner told the Kremlin-critical

Navalny was 47 years old at the time of death.

Despite international protests, the authorities continue to deny his relatives access to his body.

Navalny's team, which accuses the Russian power apparatus of murder, sees this as an attempted cover-up.

Political sociologist Maxim Alyukov also spoke to

of a “political murder” of Navalny .

After all, the Russian presidential election is just under a month away.

The critic's death could therefore be a clear warning to all other opponents.

“Considering that Vladimir Putin repeatedly physically eliminates opponents, including poisoning Navalny himself, this would not be a surprise,” the expert said.
