According to the report, every second company in Germany is affected by a labor shortage.

The Federal Employment Agency wants to provide a short-term remedy.

Munich – As a customer, you have also noticed it for a long time: there is a lack of staff in the restaurants, shops and at the airport.

The skilled workers report from the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DIHK) from November last year showed that one in two companies cannot fill vacancies, at least in part, because they cannot find suitable workers.

The Federal Employment Agency wants to provide a short-term remedy.

According to the report, conditions include: Weekly working hours must be at least 30 hours, employers must cover travel costs and employees must pay according to collective agreements or the same conditions.

Since these are unskilled workers, a professional qualification is not required.

New regulation in the Skilled Immigration Act

To make this possible, the employment agency is using a new regulation in the law on skilled immigration, which is due to take effect from March.

The Skilled Immigration Act itself came into force in November and is intended to facilitate the immigration of workers from non-EU countries.

“The new short-term employment opens up a good opportunity for employers in seasonal industries or during peak order periods to quickly hire foreign workers,” said Vanessa Ahuja, board member of the Federal Agency, to

Spiegel

.

“Interested employers can conveniently submit applications online to the employment agency from March.”

German economy: billions lost due to lack of skilled workers

The German economy has been complaining about personnel shortages for a long time.

Despite the economic stagnation, the skilled worker situation remains critical, the DIHK previously warned.

According to the chamber, a total of 1.8 million positions were unfilled.

In mathematical terms, around 90 billion euros in added value would be lost in 2023.

That corresponds to more than two percent of the gross domestic product.

The labor and skilled labor shortages are likely to continue to increase due to demographic developments, according to the DIHK.

Fewer young people are entering the labor market than older people are leaving it - around 400,000 fewer per year.
