Lumi is more than just a cute foal.
He represents hope for a species that numbers fewer than 2,000 in the wild.
Nuremberg – With its striking black stripes, fluffy ears and long legs, a small Grevy's zebra is the newest resident of Nuremberg Zoo.
At first the young stallion seemed a little unsteady on his legs, reports animal keeper Oliver Pürkel.
But now he has developed splendidly.
Pürkel and his team named the foal Lumi - a homage to a river in East Africa that flows through the original habitat of this critically endangered zebra species.
Fewer than 2,000 Grevy's zebras in the wild - newborn Lumi gives hope
According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List, there are fewer than 2,000 specimens of this species in the wild (as of 2016).
In contrast to the widespread plains zebra, the Grevy's zebra does not live in large herds, according to the zoo.
While the mares maintain a close relationship with their offspring, the stallions are more solitary.

There are now four Grevy's zebras at home in Nuremberg Zoo: In addition to Lumi, who was born in January, there are his mother Linda, his father George and the second mare Wamba.
The latter was born in 2019 as the last foal in the zoo for the time being.
Lumi has fit well into the group, says Pürkel.
“Completely cool and in principle absolutely unproblematic.”

When Lumi is about a year old, she will leave the zoo and move to another zoo.
Because then his father will see him as a rival.
The European conservation breeding program, which also includes Grevy's zebras, will decide which zoo will become Lumi's new home.
