Apple will disable web apps in the EU due to new rules contained in the Digital Markets Act (DMA) designed to break the monopoly of digital giants.

It is indicated in the updated notes for developers, taken from various American specialized sites including The Verge.

For now the change has been noticed by users who use a beta test version of update number 17.4 of its iPhone operating system iOS which should be officially launched in early March.

At first they thought it was a malfunction, then Cupertino published an explanation note to the developers.

Web apps behave like native applications with dedicated icons that access content through browsers and internet browsing programs.

After the iOS update, users in Europe who click on web app icons will see a message asking whether they want to open them in Safari, Apple's browser, or cancel the operation.

The problem, according to Cupertino, is the EU's request to allow the use of other browsers that do not use the company's architecture.

"Addressing the complex security and privacy concerns associated with web apps using alternative browser engines would require creating an entirely new integration architecture that does not currently exist in iOS and was not practical to undertake given the other demands," Apple says. of the DMA and the low user adoption of web apps on the home screen".
