Gauting/Gilching - Anyone who travels to their workplace using local public transport (ÖPNV), primarily the Munich S-Bahn, knows the daily hurdles: delays, train cancellations, signal box malfunctions at the Ostbahnhof, route closures due to people on the tracks and so on.

This Tuesday there was another announcement: “Due to damage to the bridge in Gauting, the route between Gauting and Tutzing remains closed.” But that wasn’t all.

“Delay from previous journey, premature turn, today only to Gauting” - everyday life for all the commuters who travel with the S-Bahn.

Once or twice a month there is an additional disaster: the route is closed for an indefinite period of time.

Luckily there are alternative routes for the journey to Starnberg.

Because the vulnerable S6 line via Gräfelfing, Planegg, Gauting, Starnberg to Tutzing still has to share the track in sections with the regional train to Garmisch and Kochel.

So the public transport and local commuter takes the S8 to Herrsching to Gilching-Argelsried.

There you get on the express bus X900 to Starnberg and, assuming everything goes well, you'll be in Starnberg just 20 minutes later than usual with the S6.

A traffic island stood in the way

Due to the route closure between Gauting and Tutzing this morning, many travelers to Starnberg chose the alternative route via Gilching-Argelsried and on with the X900.

And it seemed like it would work.

The bus was on time, so that the necessary connecting buses can still be reached in Starnberg.

But then something happened that was previously only known from other people's stories.

As if out of nowhere, this traffic island with this traffic sign appeared on the outskirts of Gilching near the Porsche Center 5 Seen car dealership - and then it happened: the bus driver completely drove over the traffic sign, the damage to the bus was considerable.

The journey was over, the driver had to go to the police - and we, the passengers?

We were, as a fellow traveler beautifully put it on the phone, “in the middle of nowhere”.

Some set off on foot - also on the advice of the bus driver - to the nearby Gilching Süd industrial area.

Others waited for the next X900 to make an unscheduled stop.

And there was also this one moment of happiness that morning.

The driver picked up the stranded people and took them to Starnberg.

And that's where the journey to work ended after around two and a half hours.

Luckily nothing more happened.

More alternatives

By the way, there are other alternatives to Starnberg: Take the S7 towards Wolfratshausen to Hohenschäftlarn and then continue with the 904 bus. Or straight to Wolfratshausen and then take the 975 over Höhenrain and Berg (beautiful views; commuter's note) to the district town .

Always have a good trip!
